- أأبا العلاء وأنت تدري ما الذيO Abu al-Ala—and you know what
- أأبا العلاء وأنت مني حلةO Abu al-ʿAlāʾ, you are to me a robe,
- ابدأ مقالك بالثناء على النبيBegin your speech with praise of the Prophet;
- أتعتبني عمادي عمد عينDo you reproach me, my mainstay, deliberately and knowingly?
- اختم بذكر محمد فذكرهConclude with mention of Muhammad, for remembrance of him
- إذا ما علا يأسي يغالب لي الرجاWhenever my despair rises, striving to overpower my hope,
- اسمع حديثي فإن الصدق مقبولListen to my account, for truth is accepted.
- الغيث في الغيب لا يدري به أحدThe rain is in the unseen; no one knows of it
- إلى أحمد المختار نهدي تحيةTo Ahmad, the Chosen One, we offer a greeting
- أمشرفي بصفاته وحلاهEnglish translation unavailable
- أهدي السلام تحيةًI offer peace as a greeting
- أهدى إلى خير الأنام تحيةHe offered a greeting to the best of humankind—
- أيذهب يوم لم أكفر ذنوبهShall a day pass without my atoning for its sins
- بالسعد طالعك المهلAuspicious is your newly risen star;
- بحبيب القلوب معتمد الحلقThrough the beloved of hearts, the mainstay of creation,
- تجري يمينك في القرطاس سابقةYour right hand races ahead across the paper,
- تذاكرن ذكرى أو تهيج اللواعجاThey recalled a memory, or stirred burning longings;
- ترك النزاهة عندناAbandoning recreation, in our view,
- جهل الطبيب شكايتي وشكايتيThe physician did not understand my complaint—and my complaint
- حسبي الله أحقاًGod is enough for me! Is it true
- دعوني وتسكاب الدموع السوافكLeave me to pour out streaming tears;
- دمع بنيران الضلوع يصعدTears are driven upward by the fires within the ribs;
- دنا العيد ليت العيد لم يدن وقتهEid has drawn near; would that Eid's time had not drawn near.
- رعاك الله ذا الأجر الجزيلMay God watch over you, endowed with abundant reward,
- سأصبر حتى ينجز الله وعدهI shall be patient until God fulfills His promise.
- سرى النجم نجم الدين للغرب قاصداًThe star, Najm al-Din, journeyed by night, bound for the West,
- سلام على من جاء بالحق والهدىPeace upon him who brought truth and guidance,
- شرعت في وِردها أشرعت ذابلهاI approached her watering-place and leveled her slender spear.
- شوقي إلى ذاك السناء محركMy longing for that radiance stirs
- صلوا على خير البريةِ خيماSend blessings upon the best of creation in character,
- علق رجاءك بالإله فإنهFasten your hope to God, for
- فكل أسى لا تذهب النفس عندهFor any grief at which the soul does not depart
- لا أمنع الدمع أن يهمى وأن يكفاEnglish translation unavailable
- لا يزور الخليل عندي خليلاIn my view, no friend visits a friend
- لله أبعث رغبتي متيقناًTo God I send my longing, certain
- لله درك من همامGod bless you—what a noble hero!
- لم أكتحل إثمداً ولكنI did not apply antimony as kohl; rather,
- مازال كل حليفEvery ally continues,
- مسترخص السوم غالO you who deem the asking price low—it is precious,
- مضى رمضان أو كأني به مضىRamadan has passed—or it seems to me it has passed.
- وحبلى بأبناء لها قد تمخضواAnd one pregnant with sons of her own, who have stirred
- وصدق قبل قولهمAnd affirm their words beforehand,
- يا أرحم الخلق يوم الحشر والندمO most merciful to creation on the Day of Gathering and Remorse,
- يا رب إن شفيعي من ذنوبي فيO Lord, indeed my intercessor for my sins on
- يا رب بلغ سلاميO Lord, convey my greeting of peace
- يا ليت شعري هل يرىOh, would that I knew: shall we see
- يا من تقدس عن أن يحيط وصف بذاتهO You who are too holy for
