كحلتْwas lined with kohl عينيmy eye بظلمتينِwith two darknesses
I did not apply antimony as kohl; rather,
I have not darkened my eyes from vanity, but rather
My eye was lined with two darknesses:
My eyes have been darkened by two darknesses -
بظلمةwith the darkness of الظلمِinjustice يومthe day أعلواthey raised

With the darkness of injustice, the day they raised
The darkness of the injustice when they raised
Husayn’s two heads upon the Rudayni spear,
The head of Hussein on the spear,
وظلمةand the darkness of الدهرtime إذwhen توارىvanished

And the darkness of time, when there vanished
And the darkness of time when the radiant
The radiance of the shining one of the two luminaries.
Light hid from the two lights.

ويكwoe to you! لطبfor healing ولاnor لزينfor adornment
So do not suppose the kohl upon my eye—
So do not assume the darkening of my eyes
Woe to you!—is for healing or adornment.
Is due to flirtation or adornment,
فإنfor indeed بعضsome الظنونsuspicions إثمsin
والإثمand sin واللهby God غيرnot هينslight
For some suspicions are sin,
For some assumptions are sinful,
And sin, by God, is no slight matter.
And sin, by God, is not trivial.
