أتعتبنيdo you reproach me عماديmy mainstay عمدَdeliberately عَينِwith full awareness
وعينand the substance العُذرِof the excuse تعرفهyou know it كعينيas my eye does
Do you reproach me, my mainstay, deliberately and knowingly?
Do you blame me, my pillar, for deliberately avoiding
And you know the very substance of the excuse as my own eye does.
The eye of excuse knows it like my eye
وعهديand my pledge عهدُthe pledge of معتقدٍone firmly convinced عليمٍwell aware
بمعتزْof the honor اعتزازكyour proud standing فيin رُعينِRuʿayn
And my pledge is that of one convinced and well aware
And my covenant is a covenant of a knowledgeable, steadfast believer
Of the honor of your proud standing in Ruʿayn.
With pride in your dignity in meadows
وعجزيand my inability معلنٌopenly proclaiming بالعذرthe excuse عنيon my behalf
فدعْso cease عتبيreproaching me أياO سمعيmy hearing وعينيand my eye
And my inability proclaims my excuse on my behalf.
And my incapacity is evident in apologizing for me
So cease reproaching me, O my hearing and my sight.
So leave off blaming me, O my hearing and my eye
وعودنيand accustom me to التعمدdeliberate attention بأعتناءwith care
وعوذand shield عهدناour bond عنfrom لقعthe stroke of عينan evil eye
And make attentive care for me your habit.
And habituate me to care through your deliberation
And shield our bond from the stroke of an evil eye.
And protect our covenant from the brand of an eye
وضعand set للعدلfor justice معيارa standard of اعتدالbalance
عظيمgreat معتلٍrising high عنbeyond عيبa fault عينan eye
And set a balanced standard for justice,
Set for justice a measure of moderation
Great and lofty, beyond any fault an eye could find.
Great leaning away from the flaw of an eye
أأعمدُwould I approach للبديعthe wondrous one بديعِthe marvel of عصريmy age
بعينwith the very essence العيّof inarticulacy عنتhardship بالمعينupon the helper
Would I approach the wondrous one, the marvel of my age,
Shall I compose for the eloquent the eloquence of my time
With sheer inarticulacy—a burden upon the helper?
With a critical eye, you were harsh with the helper
وعنديand I have عقدa firm bond of أعظامreverence وعلمand knowledge
بعلياهof his eminence لعمريby my life مانعينtwo restraints
While I hold a bond of reverence and knowledge
And I have a necklace of bones and a banner
Of his eminence—two restraints, by my life.
With its higher values, by my life, hindering
وضعفيand my weakness عاقنيhindered me عنfrom بعثsending عينa choice offering
تعوضهاyou recompense it بعقيانwith pure gold وعينand ready coin
And my weakness kept me from sending a choice offering
And my weakness prevented an eye from resurrecting
Which you would recompense with pure gold and ready coin.
I compensate it with deep sleep and an eye
فعَدتَso you returned عليto me معتمديmy mainstay بصنعwith kindness
لتصنعنيto nurture me علىunder رعيٍcare وعينand a watchful eye
So you returned to me, my mainstay, with kindness,
So you turned against me, my pillar, with skill
To nurture me under care and a watchful eye,
To make me skilled in pasturing and an eye
وتُمرعَand make lush عرصتيmy courtyard عنafter بعدa long absence of عهدrain
بعهدwith fresh rain هامعٍpouring عنfrom عينthe source of عينa spring
And make my courtyard lush after a long dry spell,
And you nurture my meadow after a long covenant
With fresh rain pouring from the eye of a spring.
With a covenant that turns away from the eye of an eye
وتبدعand create للمعَاليfor lofty deeds مُعجزاتmarvels
فتطلعَthus revealing للعيونto the eyes شُعاعthe radiance of عينa sun
And create marvels for lofty deeds,
And you create miracles for the heights
Thus revealing to all eyes the radiance of a sun.
So eyes rise with the ray of an eye
فياso O علماًa beacon لأعلامto beacons عظامmighty
علاrose above بالعلمthrough learning أعلىthe loftier of المطلعينthe two rising places
So, O beacon to mighty beacons,
So O science of great pillars
Who rose through learning above the loftier of the two horizons.
He rose in knowledge above the risings
وياand O عيناeminent one يعرفناwho makes known to us رعيناRuʿayn
بعزِّthrough the strength العزمof resolve عندbefore المجمعينboth assemblies
And O eminent one who makes Ruʿayn known to us
And O eye who knows us, our pasture
Through strength of resolve before both assemblies.
With the honor of resolve amongst the assembled
وياand O معتامَchooser صنعتهhis handiwork اختراعاًinvention
عجيبwondrous النوعin kind معتاماًchosen لعينfor an eye
And O chooser whose handiwork is invention,
And O protector whom you made an amazing invention
Wondrous in kind, chosen for the eye.
Wondrous in type, a protector for an eye
سأتبعُI shall follow شرعكَyour law الأعلىthe loftiest أتباعاًin full following
واشرعand drink عندat عذبthe sweet water of المشرعينboth watering places
I shall follow your loftiest law in full obedience,
I will follow your highest law faithfully
And drink at the sweet water of both watering places.
And legislate amongst the sweetest legislators
وأطلعand I rise للعيونbefore the eyes علىupon شعابٍmountain paths
يبعثhe sends طليعةan advance scout وببعثand by dispatching عينa spy
And rise before all eyes upon mountain paths;
And make eyes rise over cliffs
He sends an advance scout, with a spy dispatched as well.
Sending an avant-garde and resurrecting an eye
وأدعوand I summon عُربهاits Arabs شعباًa tribe فشعباًthen another tribe
لاnot جمعa crowd جمعa gathering of عينnotables للرعينيfor al-Ruʿaynī
And summon their Arabs, tribe after tribe:
And I call its Arabs, people after people
Not a crowd—a gathering of notables for al-Ruʿaynī.
No gathering of an eye for the grazers
وارجعand I bring back شيعةًa following لعلاfor the glory of عليʿAlī
وانزعand I pursue بانتزاعيthrough my drawing forth منزعينtwo aims
And bring back a following for ʿAlī's glory,
And I return a sect for the heights of Ali
And, through what I draw forth, pursue two aims.
And pull out my pulling in two pulls
وعنديand I have بعدafter عودتيmy return اعترافٌan acknowledgment
ومعذرةٌand an apology تعادis renewed لذيfor Dhū رُعينRuʿayn
And after my return I have an acknowledgment,
And after my return, I have a confession
And an apology renewed for Dhū Ruʿayn.
And an excuse that is repeated for the beholder
وبعضand some of الشعرthe verse عنof عينthe letter ʿayn عُريٌbare
فعدّso reckon الموضعينthe two places بموضعينagainst two places
And some of the verse is bare of the letter ʿayn;
And some poetry is defective about an eye
So reckon the two places against two others.
So count the two places in two places
