Whenever my despair rises, striving to overpower my hope,
When my despair grows strong to conquer me,
and veils the wafting fragrance of contentment,
Hope comes to fight it back gallantly.

حساماً فألقته قتيلاً مضرجا
I unsheathe my resolve against accursed despair,
I unleash my will against hopeless gloom -
as a keen sword, casting it down, slain and drenched in blood.
A sword that strikes and leaves it drenched in red.

And I tell my soul: Do not be frightened by a crisis,
I say unto myself: heed not the crisis,
for how often has the Merciful eased distress and dispelled it!
For how much grief has God's mercy relieved and unfurled!

And turn toward beautiful patience, for it
My inclination is toward beautiful patience,
surely aids whoever inclines toward patience and turns to it.
For it brings victory to those who stay the course.

And live in reverence for God; in His kindness, He will make
My faith in God's virtue gently paves
a way out for you from every strait.
Ways out of trials however contrived and enclosed.

And when you dislike what befalls you, be content and submit,
When I dislike something I accept and surrender,
for within its folds, what you love comes to you enfolded.
For in its folds comes a gift lovingly packaged and posed.

For this is a path: if you are guided to its course,
This is the path - if guided, you will discover
you will find an ascent to the heights of happiness.
An ascending road to the empire of happiness and repose.

Indeed, whenever adversity grows dark, I behold
Truly, with clear-sightedness I sense through the dark,
the lamp of my hope kindled in its deep darkness.
The lamp of my hope in its shadowy creases morphed.

If fate is at peace with me, by God, I care not,
If destiny waves peace, God-willing, I am at peace,
even if time's steed is saddled for war.
Though the sword of fate for war may sharpen its edge.

And I have trust in God; I know that it
I've confidence in God - I know it surely

My hope is the hope of a servant ever schooled
My hope hopes as a servant taught decorum,
in sincere hope in his Lord, and thoroughly trained.
Who trusts his Lord and to goodness was devoted.

I know the fairest of acts is to meet
comes to whoever hopes, bearing gracious favors.
Beauty with beauty, as we were denotated.

My state in thanking God is one of radiance,
whose beauty shines into view and displays its splendor.
Gleaming in grace, blooming, exalted.
