إذ الناس ناس والعباد بغرة

When people were people and worshipers with deceit

لعمرك ما عرس بدار مضيعة

By your life! No wedding takes place in a lost house

ربما خير الفتى

Sometimes the youth is given a choice

ترى عبداتهن يعدن حدبا

I grew tired of them counting ridges

أرادت طريق الجفر ثم أضلها

She wanted to take the path of Al-Jafr then she was misled

عفا وخلا ممن عهدت به خم

He forgave and parted from whom I trusted to be pliant,

ألا من لمولى لا يزال كأنه

Alas! He who has a Master that never fails

تضمنت بالأحساب ثم كفيتها

I was versed in calculations, yet I abandoned them,

عذافرة ضبطاء تخدي كأنها

Shy doves taking flight as though they were

رأيت رجالا يكرهون بناتهم

I saw men who disliked their daughters

لعمرك ما أهويت كفي لريبة

By your life! My hands have never intentionally done wrong

فهم مشيحون لا يألون ما طردوا

They are determined riders who do not stop however much they are chased away

أتهجر نعما أم تديم لها وصلا

Shall I abandon bounties, or keep the bond tied?

تبدلت من ليلى ودسكرة لها

You have changed from a radiant Leila to one with pallor

وليلى حبيب في بغيض مجاذب

And Layla, a hated lover quarrelling

تأبد لأي منهم فعتائده

For which of them is prolonged his covenants

على حين ما بي من رياض لصعبة

While the gardens are still hard for me to reach

ورثنا المجد عن آباء صدق

We inherited glory from our honest fathers.

معقومة لاحم الدأيات جوشنها

The griefs drank from their mouths unwatered wine,

يخفضها الآل طورا ثم تحسبها

The lute is muted, then assumed to grieve

أعاذل هل يأتي القبائل حظها

وتكليفي مناقيها الردافى

رأت نخلة من بطن أحوس حفها

She saw a date palm in the belly of Ahwos

كل ابن أخت زائد أهل أمه

لعمرك ما مزينة رهط معن

By your life, the company of Ma'n is not adorned

إن بمدفع الملحاء قصرا

With the cannon of salty sea a palace is built

اخذت بعين المال حتى نهكته

I grasped money with my eyes until I exhausted it

لعمرك ما أدري وإني لأوجل

By your life, I know not which of us

لعمر أبي ربيعة ما نفاه

By the life of Abi Rabi'ah, he would not have left

إذا تقاعس صعب في حزامته

If an obstinate one drags his feet in his strap,

ظللنا بمستن الرياح غدية

We lingered in the shadows of the morning breeze

أعاذل أقصري ودعي بياتي

Reproach me no more, and cease your blaming,

كأن لم يكن يا أم حقة قبل ذا

As if there was nothing, O mother of Hiqah, before this

تأوبه طيف بذات الجراثم

A specter haunted him, one of past crimes,

إليك سعيد الخير جابت مطيتي

My she-camel carried me to you, O good fortune,

باتت قلوصي بالحجاز مناخة

My she-camel spent the night kneeling in Hejaz

توهمت ربعا بالمعبر واضحا

I imagined a clear quarter by the crossing,

ألم تعلمي من قد صبرت خلافه

Do you not know whom I have had patience against

تولى معشر منهم ضعاف

قفا يا خليلي المطي المقردا

رب خير أتاك

تنفس في وجهي فكدت أموت

وإنك فرع من قريش وإنما

ألا من مبلغ عني رسولا
