1. We lingered in the shadows of the morning breeze
Until this day rose in dire circumstance
2. At Ibn al-Zubayr's home, imprisoned in a house
Devoid of kindness, grace, and gifts to share
3. Abu Bakr pleaded as our day dragged on
In bitter Hijazi winter, bleak and bare
4. "Let three of seventy eat," he said.
"What woeful tidings to declare!"
5. To him I said, "Do not deny us, for ahead
Lie the palms of Ibn Abbas and his heir,
6. So be at peace, make do with your old goat
It has nanny goats on which to feed and care."
