لا تنكرن من الأنام تفاوتا
Deny not within mankind inequality
لقد طال هذا الليل بعد فراقه
This night has lingered long after their leave
وذي هيف يدعى بموسى بطرفه
And with a cloak called Moses in its fringe,
جمع الفضائل كلها فكأنما
He gathered all virtues as if
يا ربع أين ترى الأحبة يمموا
O quarter, where do you think the loved ones went
تريك بروقا في الأكف تدلنا
You show flashes in the palms that guide us
وخاصمني بدر السما فخصمته
The full moon reproached me, so I reproached him in return
ماله من فتك راحته
His calm has no aggression,
فإن تك قد غاضت بجود أكفكم
If you find eyes once generous are now downcast,
هو الدهر فانظر أى قرن تحاربه
It is time, so see which era you fight
ومصفرة لا عن هوى غير أنها
With yellowness not from passion, yet she
وسمر عوال زينتها أكفهم
With bracelets that adorn their wrists they came
أبى الله إلا أن تعان وتنصرا
God willed that you be supported and aided
الخلق دونك في الفعال
Creation is inferior to You in deeds
فقلت وقد سئلت بلا احتشام
Roses are red, violets are blue
وافى فأردى رجالا بعدما نعموا
You came and revived men after they perished
ومهفهف أسياف مقلته
His unsheathed sword's blades
أقصر فديتك عن لومي وعن عذلي
My life is too short for blame or rebuke,
بنفسي من أبكى السموات موته
With my soul I mourn the death
أعلمت حين تجاور الحيان
You knew when the loves drew near,
إذا قابلته ملوك البلاد
When the kings of countries meet him,
ليت شعرى كيف أنتم بعدنا
I wonder how you all have fared since we parted,
لا تطمعن فى أرض أن أقيم بها
No land must hope that I will stay,
أمير المؤمنين وخير ملجا
O commander of the faithful and best refuge
ويا عجبا حتى النسيم يخوننى
How strange it is that even the breeze betrays me
أيا صاحبي سجن الخزانة خليا
Oh my two companions in the prison of confinement
وإن أمير المؤمنين وذكره
The Prince of the Faithful and his mention
أيا صاحبي سجن الخزانة خليا
O my two friends, prisoners of the closet, release me
أغارت علينا باللحاظ عيون
The eyes beneath the veils lie in ambush for us,
وشادن ما مثله في الجنان
With beauty unrivaled in the gardens
لم تنل بالسيوف في الحرب إلا
You have won by your glances as much as you attained with swords in war,
فدع التمدح بالقديم فكم عفا
Leave off boasting of the past, for how much has passed away,
فلأكسون علاك كل غريبة
I shall adorn your heights with every strange creature,
لقد جرد الإسلام منك مهندا
Islam has stripped you of a whetted blade
كم كنت أسمع أن الدهر ذو غير
How often have I heard that fate is fickle,
لقد شك طرفي والركائب جنح
My eyes doubted and the pillars trembled,
وغر على غر جياد كأنما
And horses upon horses, as though
لكم خيال فى الجفون ممثل
You have an imagination in your eyelids, ever dramatized,
وقد أنكروا قتلي بسيف لحاظه
They denied that my sword, with its sharp blade, had killed him,
ربع الفؤاد خلال تلك الأربع
My heart was cloven in four 'midst that blessed four,
إذا احرقت في القلب موضع سكناها
If you burn her dwelling place in the heart,
أغنى عيان معانيه النواظر عن
The radiance of his essence made eloquent
بأي بلاد غير أرضي أخيم
In what foreign lands could I pitch my tents
كأني وقد فاضت سيول مدامعى
As if my tears like torrents streamed forth,
لحقت الماخضين الشعر قبلي
ومن نكد الأيام أني كما ترى
ومرنح الأعطاف تحسب أنه
لا ترج ذا نقص ولو أصبحت
بليت برفاء لواحظ طرفه
أترى بأي وسيلة أتوسل
يعنفني من لو تحقق ما الهوى
خليلى إن ضاقت بلاد برحبها
بالله يا ريح الشمال
وقبل كفك لا زالت مقبلة
هم نصب عيني أنجدوا أوغاروا
لئن زادني قرب المزار تشوقا
يا أيها الملك الذي أوصافه
إذا صلت قال الدين والعدل منصف
أأحبابنا ما لي إذا ما ذكرتكم
وينجده إن خانه الدهر أوسطا
وما لي إلى ماء سوى النيل غلة
عضدت الندى بالبأس تقضى على العدا
وتلقى الدهر منه بليث غاب
خيرة الله في العباد ومن يعضد
كأن قدودهم أنبتت
