إياك من زلل اللسان فإنما

Beware of slips of the tongue, for the sense

نسبتم الظلم لعمالكم

You blamed injustice on your workers,

وإِنك في نقد أشعارنا

You criticize our poems

أنا ابن الذي إن قال صدق قوله

I am the son of he whose word, if spoken, is believed

عسى وطن أودى بألفتنا شحطا

Perhaps a homeland whose separation has pained us

يسعى الحريص ورزقه مقسوم

The eager strives though his provision is preordained

لا تطلبن من الفراء معرفة

I live not free, though Geneva's walls do round me stand;

اليوم حلي عاطل العلياء

Today the exalted one donned the dress of joy

وإن طالب فراء بمعرفة

Though one who seeks fragrance in empty wastes

تعيب علي مألوف القصابة

You blame me for my usual butchery,

فمنهم الكراش والسلاخ

Among them are the parchment-maker and the skinner

تريد لتطفئ أنوارنا

You want to extinguish our lights

إذا ما غزونا أرض آل عنيزة

When we raid the land of the Bani 'Anizah

لحا الله بيتول الدنية إنها

Alas for Bitul's worldly abode

الناس فرع من أروام واحد

People are branches of one tree

المرء تحت تصرف الأقدار

Man is subject to the decrees of fate

ليت شعري بم ذا المفخر

I wonder, with what pride do you boast

أشقى لجدك أن تكون أديبا

How wretched it is that you aspire to become a man of letters

وأما وعيدك بالقولة التى

As for your threat with the poem

في سورة الشعراء عذري واضح

In Surat Ash-Shu'ara is my clear excuse

رب ظبي لقيته

Many a gazelle I have met

وسواء أنتم في

Whether in hardship or in ease

فقالوا شهدنا إنك السابق الذي

They said: "We testify that you are the foremost

وإني لذو بز من الحمد طرزه

I bear the burden of praise's adornment

وإنما قيل فراء لصانعكم

It is said you are courageous, to flatter you

مقلتي هل الشؤون

My eyes, what troubles

إذا ما تأتت في عدوك فرصة

If an opportunity arises against your enemy,

فإن قليلا معشر لست فيهم

Though I'm few in company I find,

عوائد هذه الدنيا ضروب

The fortunes of this world have different forms

قالوا على جهة الاغباء أغرب من

They said that idiocy is stranger than

أَعلي تعتب شاعر الغوغاء

O you who rebukes the poet of the rabble

ينال من العلم الذكي نصيبه

The wise achieves knowledge even without toil or exertion

وإن العدو لكالحية ال

The enemy is like a snake

تريك مضاء المرهفات المضارب

You are shown by youthful thought the hidden meanings,

بلوت عليا الفراء فيما

I tested Ali in eloquence

أنا السابق الرحب الخطا في التأدب

I am the foremost, broad-stepped in courtesy

وحليت نفسك بالشعر زعما

You adorned yourself with poetry, supposedly

أبا الفضل لا ترتب بفضلك أنني

O Abul Fadl, do not blame me for urging you,

يا مفتيا بانتفاض الشرع أعصارا

O you who issues legal opinions allowing uprising against Islamic law for ages

عجبت لذي سقم معضل

I'm amazed at one with chronic illness

أروم الجود من زمن شحيح

I aspire to generosity in a miserly time,

فخذ أولا بسفايج العقل خالصا

Take first your cup of pure intellect

فلما أن تلاقينا

When we met

يا أبا جعفر لعا من عثار

O Abu Ja'far, a curse on misfortune

وبدر لاح من تحت السلاهم

ألم خيال مية عن لمام

ألم يأن أن يغنى العزاء لبيب

أعلي ما هذا الذي

نساء ولكن شان أوجهها اللحى

وأنا واياكم كمرء معذب

نزه الحكمة عمن

برح الخفاء فلات حين خفاء

وكم ليلة أحلى من الأمن بتها

وقد قلت حقا والحقيقة مهيع

وعاطلة حليت بالمجد جيدها

يا مجهد النفس في نيل المنى طمعا

وأنكم في نشركم لعيوبنا

وكم للناس في الأمثال

ألستم بتدليس الفراء عرفتم

إذا كان منا واحد في قبيلة

ثناء الفتى يبقى ويفنى ثراؤه

هاتها كوثرية عسجديه
