- إذا افتقر المولى سعى لك جاهداWhen an ally falls into poverty, he strives earnestly for you,
- إذا نزل ابن المصطفى بطن تلعةWhen the son of the Chosen One settles in a ravine's hollow,
- أراني إذا غالبت بالصبر حبهاI find that, when I battle my love for her with patience,
- أرق الحزين وعاده سهدهThe grieving man lay awake, and his sleeplessness returned to him,
- أستغفر الله ربي من مخدرةI seek forgiveness from God, my Lord, concerning a secluded woman.
- أعيني جودا بالدموع وأسعداMy eyes shed tears generously, and gladden
- أعيني لا تستعجلا الدمع وانظراMy eyes, do not hasten the tears and look
- أقول له والدمع مني كأنهI say to him, while my tears seem like
- ألا أبلغا أهل المخاضة أننيEnglish translation available
- ألا أيها الباكي أخاه وإنماO you who weep for your brother, weep only
- ألا قد رابني ويريب غيريBehold, something has troubled me—and would trouble others too:
- ألم تروا أن فتى سيداHave you not seen that a noble young lord
- أما لك أن تزور وأنت خلوCan you not visit, while free of love,
- إني لأعجب مني كيف آفكهمI truly marvel at myself: how do I deceive them?
- باتت لعينك عبرة وسجومYour eye spent the night shedding streaming tears,
- بكت أن رأت أطلال هند تبدلتThey wept to see that Hind's ruins had exchanged
- تثاقلت أن كنت ابن عم نكحتهYou grew reluctant because I was a cousin you married,
- حرق يا صفاة في ذراكMay you be burned, O crag, upon your heights,
- خليلي دلاني عباثر إنهاMy two friends, guide me to ʿAbāthir, for
- سبحان ربك تب مما أتيت بهGlory be to your Lord! Repent of what you have done.
- سقى الله أطلالا بأكثبة الحمىMay God rain upon the ruins amid the dunes of al-Ḥimā,
- شهدت غداة خصم بني سليمI witnessed, on the morning of Banu Sulaym’s dispute,
- طلبت فلم أدرك بوجهي وليتنيI sought, but my face won me nothing; would that I
- ظللت لدى أبياتها وكأننيI stayed beside her tents, as though I were
- كأني موف للهلاك عشيةAs though I were on the brink of death one evening,
- كفاني الذي ضيعت مني وإنماWhat you have squandered of mine is enough for me; only

- لو بينت لك قبل يوم فراقهاHad she made it clear to you, before the day of her departure,
- لئن أقمت بحيث الفيض في رجبIf indeed I remain where al-Fayḍ lies, in Rajab,
- لئن عانس قد شاب بين قرنهاIf indeed a spinster has gone gray from her crown
- نعم الفتى فجعت به إخوانهWhat a fine young man! His brothers were bereaved of him
- وإني قد نصحت فلم تصدقAnd I have indeed advised you, yet you did not believe
- وأيدي الهدايا ما رأيت معاتباBy the forelegs of the sacrificial beasts, I have seen no reproacher
- وقصيرة الأيام ود جليسهاHer friend wished the days to linger, though parted
- يا ابن الهاشمين طرا حزت مجدهماO son of the two Hashims, you have gained their glory in full;
- يا أحسن الناس لولا أن نائلهاO fairest of people, were it not that her bounty
- يا أيها المتمني أن تكون فتىO you who wish to be a noble young man
- يسعى لك المولى ذليلا مدقعاThe client toils for you, abject and utterly destitute;
