أَلَم تَرَوا أَنَّ فَتىً سَيِّداً

أَلَم تَرَوا أَنَّ فَتىً سَيِّداً

راحَ عَلى نَعشِ بَني مالِكِ

راحَ عَلى نَعشِ بَني مالِكِ

Have you not seen that a noble young lord

Have you not seen that a noble young man

departed upon the bier of the sons of Mālik?

departed upon the bier of Banu Malik?

لا أَنفَسُ العَيشَ لِمَن بَعدَهُ

لا أَنفَسُ العَيشَ لِمَن بَعدَهُ

وَأَنفَسُ الهُلكَ عَلى الهالِكِ

وَأَنفَسُ الهُلكَ عَلى الهالِكِ

I do not begrudge life to anyone after him,

I do not envy those who outlive him their life,

but I do begrudge death to the man who died.

but I envy the dead man his death.
