أَقولُI say لَهُto him وَالدَمعُand the tears مِنّيfrom me كَأَنَّهُas though it were
جُمانٌpearls وَهيَcome loose مِنfrom سِلكِهِtheir string مُتَبادِرُrushing forth
I say to him, while my tears seem like
pearls loosed from their string, tumbling forth:
أَلاlisten! أَيُّهاO you الناعيherald of the death of اِبنَthe son of زَينَبَZaynab غُدوَةًat daybreak

O herald of Ibn Zaynab's death at dawn,
you have announced generosity's death—may calamities turn against you!
فَظِلْتُso I remained كأنّيas though I أغُبِطَتْwere firmly settled بجبَالهَاwith their mountains
عليّupon me بأعْلَىat the top of المُقْرحينal-Muqrihayn العواقِرُthe barren dunes
So I remained as though, with their mountains, there had settled
upon me the barren dunes high on al-Muqrihayn.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed أَمسىhas become قِرىthe meal of الضَيفthe guest عاتِماًlate in coming
بِذيat Dhu الفَرشِal-Farsh لَمّاwhen غَيَّبَتكَhid you away المَقابِرُthe graves
By my life, the guest's meal has grown late
at Dhu al-Farsh, since the graves concealed you.
إِذاwhen سَوَّفواthey delay نادَواthey call صَداكَyour lifeless form وَدونَهُand before it
صَفيحٌflat stones وَخَوّارٌand soft material مِنَof التُربِthe soil مائِرُshifting
When they delay, they call to your lifeless form, though before it
lie stone slabs and soft, shifting earth.
يُنادونَthey call out مَنone who أَمسىhas now become تَقَطَّعُare cut short دونَهُshort of him
مِنَbecause of البُعدِdistance أَنفاسُthe breaths of الصَدورِthe chests الزَوافِرُsighing
They call to one now beyond the reach
of the chests' sighing breaths, so great is the distance.
فَقوميso rise اِضرِبيstrike عَينَيكِyour two eyes ياO هِندُHind لَنwill never تَرَيyou see

أَباًa father مِثلَهُlike him تَسموrise إِلَيهِtoward him المَفاخِرُglories
So rise and strike your eyes, O Hind; you will never see
a father like him, to whom all glories aspire.
وَكُنتِand you used to إِذاwhenever فاخَرتِyou boasted أَسمَيتِyou named والِداًa father
يَزينُhe adorns كَماjust as زانَadorned اليَدَينِthe two hands الأَساوِرُbracelets
And whenever you boasted, you named a father
who graced you as bracelets grace the hands.
فَإِنfor if تَعوِليهِyou bewail him تَشفِyou soothe يَومَon the day of عَويلِهِmourning for him

For if you bewail him, on the day he is mourned you will ease
your burning grief, or someone will excuse your lament.
وَتُحزِنكِand will grieve you لَيلاتٌnights طِوالٌlong وَقَدand already مَضَتhave passed
بِذيat Dhu الفَرشِal-Farsh لَيلاتٌnights تَسُرُّbringing joy قَصائِرُshort
And long nights will grieve you, though there have passed
at Dhu al-Farsh short nights that brought delight.
فَلَقّاكِso may He grant you رَبٌّa Lord يَغفِرُwho forgives الذَنبَsin رَحمَةًmercy
إِذاwhen بُلِيَتare tested يَومَon the Day of الحِسابِReckoning السَرائِرُsecrets
So may a Lord who forgives sin grant you mercy
when secrets are tested on the Day of Reckoning.
إِذاif ماfor emphasis اِبنُthe son of زادِZad (provision of) الرَكبِal-Rakb (the caravan) لَمnot يُمسِlive to evening لَيلَةًa night

قِفاafter صَفَرٍSafar لَمnot يَقرَبِapproach الفَرشَal-Farsh زائِرُa visitor
If Ibn Zad al-Rakb does not live to see a night
beyond Safar, no visitor will approach al-Farsh.
وَقَدand indeed عَلَّمَhe made known to الأَقوامَthe peoples أَنَّthat بَناتَهُhis daughters
صَوادِقُtruthful إِذاwhen يَندُبنَهُthey lament him وَقَواصِرُand falling short
And he has made the peoples know that his daughters
are truthful when they lament him, yet fall short.
