أَرانيI find myself إِذاwhen غالَبتُI strive to overcome بِالصَبرِwith patience حُبَّهاlove for her
أَراني إِذا غالَبتُ بِالصَبرِ حُبَّها
أَبىrefuses الصَبرُpatience ماwhat أَلقىI endure بِسُعدىbecause of Suʿdā فَأُغلَبُand so I am overcome
أَبى الصَبرُ ما أَلقى بِسُعدى فَأُغلَبُ
I find that, when I battle my love for her with patience,
When with patience I overcome love for her
patience balks at what I endure because of Suʿdā, and I am overcome.
Patience itself refuses what would bring me bliss
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتshe has learned عِندَduring التَعاتُبِmutual reproach أَنَّناthat we
وَقَد عَلِمَت عِندَ التَعاتُبِ أَنَّنا
إِذاwhen ظَلَمَتناshe wrongs us أَوor ظَلَمناwe do wrong سَنُعتِبُwe shall appease her
إِذا ظَلَمَتنا أَو ظَلَمنا سَنُعتِبُ
And she has learned, amid our mutual reproaches, that we,
And she knows, when we reproach each other
whether she wrongs us or we wrong her, will appease her.
If we wrong or are wronged, we will make amends
وَإِنّيand I وَإِنand even if لَمdid not أَجنِI commit ذَنباًa wrong سَأَبتَغيI shall seek
وَإِنّي وَإِن لَم أَجنِ ذَنباً سَأَبتَغي
رِضاهاher favor وَأَعفوand I forgive ذَنبَهاher wrongdoing حينَwhen تُذنِبُshe errs
رِضاها وَأَعفو ذَنبَها حينَ تُذنِبُ
And I, even if I have done no wrong, shall seek
Though I've done no wrong, still I'll try
her favor, and forgive her wrongdoing when she errs.
To please her, pardoning when she does wrong
وَإِنّيand I إِذاwhen أَذنبتُI err فيهاconcerning her يَزيدُنيincreases in me
وَإِنّي إِذا أَذنبتُ فيها يَزيدُني
بِهاfor her عَجَباًadmiration مَنwhoever كانَused to فيهاabout her يُؤَنِّبُreproaches
بِها عَجَباً مَن كانَ فيها يُؤَنِّبُ
And I, whenever I err concerning her, am moved
And when I've wronged her, it makes me
to admire her all the more by whoever reproaches me about her.
