I truly marvel at myself: how do I deceive them?

Or how do I trick people with no foolishness in them?

I keep them distracted in the deserts and tell them

Tales of people who never existed and were never created.

And had I spoken truthfully, I would have said: the people had already arrived

When we set out, and I arrive at the moment they set out.

Or how are hands that have betrayed no one denied

Anything, while their hands gain it, though they have stolen?

And we shoot at the owl until it has no

Sun, while they shoot until the horizon flashes.

They shoot at a dark-eyed one, dyed with something other than blood,

Driving it off; but you—your quarry's sash is clotted blood.

You pursue it with two dogs, seeking it; their quarry

Is prey hoped for briefly, then embraced.

I kept leading them down until I placed them

At the bottom of a valley bend with not even stagnant water.

And had I left them there, they would have been torn apart by

The two elders of Muzaynah: if the two said, 'Caw!' the others cawed.

If you are always your friend's two protectors,

And time is changeful, its colors manifold,

Then give me something to enjoy, for I see no one

Without an appointed end in death—a finish to be raced toward.
