أَسيرٌa captive مُعَنّىtormented فيin مُخَلخَلِهِhis ankle كَبلُa heavy shackle
I stayed beside her tents, as though I were
a tormented captive with a heavy shackle at his ankle.
I am given a choice إِمّاeither جَلسَةٌa sitting عِندَwith كارِهٍone who is unwilling
وَإِمّاor else مَراحٌa departure لاnot قَريبٌnear وَلاnor سَهلُeasy
I am given a choice: either to sit with one who resents me,
or to make a journey neither short nor easy.
فَإِنَّكِfor indeed you لَوif أَكرَمتِyou honored ضَيفَكِyour guest لَمwould not يَعِبfind fault
عَلَيكِagainst you الَّذيwhat تَأَتينَyou do عَمٌّa paternal uncle وَلاnor بَعلُa husband
For, had you honored your guest, no fault would have been found
with what you did, by either uncle or husband.
وَقَدand indeed كانَused to يَنميهاraise her إِلىto ذِروَةthe summit العُلاhigh honor
أَبٌa father لاnot تَخَطّاهُpass him by المَطِيَّةُthe mount وَالرَحلُand the saddle
And she had been raised to the summit of honor
by a father whom no mount or saddle would pass by.
فَهَلso, are أَنتyou إِلّاanything but جَنَّةٌa garden عَبقَرِيَّةٌof ʿAbqar
يُخالِطُmingles with مَنwhomever خالَطتِyou consorted with مِنfrom حُبِّكُمlove of you all خَبلُmadness
Are you, then, anything but a garden of ʿAbqar?
Madness from loving you overtakes whomever you consort with.
وَهَلand are أَنتِyou إِلّاanything but نَبعَةٌa nabʿ tree (bow-wood) كانَwas أَصلُهاits root
نُضاراًpure gold فَلَمso did not يَفضَحكِshame you فَرعٌa branch وَلاnor أَصلُa root
And are you not a nabʿ tree whose root was
pure gold, so neither branch nor root has shamed you?
صَدَدتِyou turned away اِمرِأًa man عنfrom ظِلِّthe shade of بَيتِكِyour tent ماnot لَهُhe has

You turned a man from your tent’s shade; he would have no
friend or kin in your valley, were it not for you.
