حُرِّقَmay it be burned ياO صَفاةُsmooth rock فيupon ذُراكِyour heights
بِالنارِwith fire إِنif لَمdo not تَمنَعيyou protect أَرواكِyour mountain goats
May you be burned, O crag, upon your heights,
Burn, O Saffah, with your help denied,
with fire, if you do not protect your mountain goats.
In fire, lest your limbs you guard.
تَعَلَّميknow أَنthat بِذيat Dhu الأَراكِal-Arak
أَيُّتهاO الأَروىthe mountain goats ذَويmen possessed of عِراكِcombat
Know that at Dhu al-Arak,
Learn that he with mighty throne,
O mountain goats, there are men of combat—
O most noble, of lofty seat,
قَوماًa band أَعَدّواthey prepared شَبَكَthe netting of الشِباكِthe snares
يَبغونَthey seek ضَبعاًa hyena قَتَلَتshe killed أَباكِyour father
a band who have prepared the netting of snares,
Leads a folk who spread their net,
seeking a hyena that killed your father.
Seeking vixen who slew their sire.
نِعمَhow excellent مُلَوّيa twister of الحِيَدِthe projecting ridges المِداكِthe grinding stone
إِذاwhen صَوَّتَcried out الجالِبُthe game-driver فيin أُخراكِyour rear
What a fine twister of ridges is the grinding stone!
Blessed he who twists the stubborn yew,
When the game-driver cried out behind you,
When sound the hounds in rear of you,
وَلَمand did not يَقُلsay مُنتَصِحاًoffering sincere counsel إِيّاكِbeware!
بَينَbetween مَقاطيهاits cords رَكِبتِyou fell upon فاكِyour mouth
and did not say, in sincere counsel, 'Beware!'
Yet speaks no word to counsel you,
between its cords, you fell upon your mouth.
While you pass amid the brakes.
فَعُدتُthen I returned وَالطَعنُand the thrusting عَلىupon كُلاكِyour kidneys
مِثلَlike الأَضاحيsacrificial beasts بِيَدِin the hands of النُساكِthe worshippers
Then I returned, with thrusts at your kidneys,
So I returned, though pierced with points,
like sacrificial beasts in the hands of worshippers,
Like victims, by hands of devotees,
يُرمىis hurled بِالأَكتافِwith the shoulders عَلىupon الأَوراكِthe haunches
كَماjust as أَطَحتِyou hurled العَبدَthe slave عَنfrom صَفاكِyour smooth rock
shoulders flung upon haunches,
Thrown on the hillside tumbled heaps,
as you hurled the slave from your crag.
As you did cast your slave away.
أَمّاas for السَيالِيُّal-Sayali فَلَنthen will not يَنساكِhe forgets you
لَوif يَرتَميكِshoot at you الناسُthe people ماnot رَماكِhe shot at you
As for al-Sayali, he will not forget you;
But Sailiy will not forget you, nay,
if people were to shoot at you, he would not shoot you.
Though men should stone you, he’d not stay.
