The grieving man lay awake, and his sleeplessness returned to him,

because of the night visitations of grief that come upon him.

And I remembered the one for whom my liver grew tender,

but he refused: his liver does not soften toward me.

And he refused: he will not settle in my land,

ever; nor will his land restore me.

So, when he refused, I broke off my affection for him,

like a crack in a glass vessel, enduring forever.

And I knew that the birds had spoken true,

on the day of al-Kadānah, in the worst of what they foretold.

So be patient, for everyone with an allotted lifespan

has a day that comes, when his numbered days run out.

What fault do you find with your times, when

the beloved has departed, and grief for him has settled upon me?
