What a fine young man! His brothers were bereaved of him
What a fine lad, for whose loss his brothers grieve
On the day of al-Baqīʿ by the calamities of time.
On the day of al-Baqee', midst the blows of fate's calamities,
سَهلُeasy of access الفَناءِthe courtyard إِذاwhen حَلَلتَyou alighted بِبابِهِat his door

His courtyard is welcoming when you alight at his door;
Easy is the house to enter when its owner welcomes you in,
He is open-handed, his servants well-mannered.
Open-handed, well-mannered servants in its surround,
وَإِذاand when رَأَيتَyou saw شَقيقَهُhis brother وَصَديقَهُand his friend

And when you saw his brother and his friend,
And when you see his brother and his friend,
You could not tell which of them was related by blood.
You know not, O kinsmen, which of the two to pity more.
