وَأَيديby the forelegs of الهَداياthe sacrificial beasts ماnot رَأَيتُI have seen مُعاتِباًone who reproaches
مِنَamong الناسِthe people إِلّاexcept السعاعِدِيَّةِal-Saʿāʿidiyya أَجمَلُmore gracious
By the forelegs of the sacrificial beasts, I have seen no reproacher
Among people more gracious than al-Saʿāʿidiyya.
وَقَدand indeed أَخطَأَتنيshe missed me يَومَon the day of بَطحاءِBatḥāʾ (pebbly plain) مَعمَرُMaʿmar
لَهاshe has كِفَفٌnets تَصطادُshe hunts فيهاin them وَأَحبُلُand ropes
And she missed me that day at Batḥāʾ Maʿmar;
She has nets in which she hunts, and ropes.
وَقَدand indeed قالَsaid أَهليmy family حينَwhen كُنّيتُI was given a byname كُنيَةًa byname
أَباfather of الجَونِal-Jawn فَاِكسَبso earn مِثلَهاits like حينَwhen تَرحَلُyou depart
And my family said when I was given a byname:
“Abū al-Jawn, so earn its like when you depart.”
وَإِنand if باتَspent the night إيضاعيmy hurried riding بِأَمرِin a matter of مَسَرَّةٍjoy
لَكُنَّfor you (feminine plural) فَماthen what تَسخَطنَyou resent (feminine plural) فيin العَيشِlife أَطوَلُlonger
And if my hurried riding by night is a source of joy
For you, then what you resent in life lasts longer.
