أَستَغفِرُI seek forgiveness اللَهَGod رَبيmy Lord مِنconcerning مُخَدَّرَةٍa secluded woman
يَوماًone day بَداappeared لِيَto me مِنهاfrom her الكَشحُthe flank وَالكَتَدُand the upper back
I seek forgiveness from God, my Lord, concerning a secluded woman.
I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for intoxication
One day her flank and upper back came into view before me.
One day its tipsiness and wooziness appeared to me
مِنfrom رُفقَةٍa company صاحَبوناthey accompanied us فيat نِدائَهُمُtheir summons
كُلٌّall حَرامٌin pilgrimage consecration فَماso not ذُمّواthey were blamed وَلاnor حُمِدواthey were praised
She belonged to a company who accompanied us at their summons,
From a company whose calls we answered
All in pilgrimage consecration, so neither blamed nor praised.
Each thing forbidden, so they were not praised nor blamed
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen البُدنَthe sacrificial camels كاسَتfell over فيat مَناحِرِهاtheir slaughtering places
يَبلوtests المَناسِمَthe hoof-pads منهاfrom them مُزبِدٌfoaming جَسِدُclotted
Until, when the sacrificial camels fell at their slaughtering places,
Until when the bodies bent over in their throats
Foaming, clotted blood from them put their hoof-pads to the test,
From them foamy rotten flesh dripped
وَحَلَّقَand shaved their heads القَومُthe men وَاِعتَمّواand they donned turbans عَمائِمَهُمtheir turbans
فَحَلَّthen left consecration كُلُّevery حَرامٍconsecrated pilgrim رَأسُهُhis head لَبِدُmatted
And the men shaved their heads and donned their turbans,
And the people rounded up and donned their turbans
Every consecrated pilgrim with matted hair was then released from consecration.
So each forbidden thing raised its head high
أَقبَلتُI approached أَسأَلُهاasking her ماwhat بالُthe condition of رِفقَتِهاher companions
وَماand not أُباليI care أَغابَwere they absent? القَومُthe men أَمor شَهِدواthey were present
I approached, asking her how her companions were,
I came asking her about her company
And I cared not whether the men were absent or present.
And I care not whether the people attended or were absent
فَقَرَّبَتthen she drew closer لِيَto me وَاِحلَولَتand grew sweet مَقالَتُهاher speech
وَخَوَّفَتنيand she frightened me وَقالَتand she said بَعضَsome of ماwhat تَجِدُshe feels
Then she drew closer to me, and her words grew sweet,
She drew near to me and sweetened her talk
And she frightened me and voiced some of what she felt:
And frightened me and said some of what she felt
أَنّىhow يَنالُcan attain حِجازِيٌّa man of the Hijaz بِحاجَتِهِin pursuit of his desire

How can a man of the Hijaz, seeking his desire, win
How can a Hijazi attain his desire
A woman of Banu al-Qayn, whose nearest dwelling is Barad?
With any of the daughters of Qain their homes remote
