They wept to see that Hind's ruins had exchanged
She wept when she saw the ruins of Hind changed
Their inhabitant—Hind's neighbors, then her mate.
Her neighbors at Hind lived there, so she wept for them
فأحزَنَso it grieved منthose who لمdid not يبكِweep for هنداًHind وهيَّجتand stirred

ليin me الذكرَremembrance دارٌa house قدalready تولَّتhad passed عصورُهاits ages
So it grieved those who had not wept for Hind; memories were stirred
So whoever did not weep for Hind was saddened
In me by a house whose days had passed.
The house reminded me of times gone by

When the house is no longer hung with a curtain, nor
If a house has no curtains or
Do its curtains conceal Umm Ammar,
A hardworking mother to adorn its walls

Then let Hind's neighbors know no close friend
May Hind’s neighbors not know her to be stingy
Other than her; and let her visitor wisely stay away.
As others visit while its owner sits idle

And whenever poverty and wealth became
When poverty and wealth were
Opponents, her needy petitioner could never exhaust her wealth.
Adversaries, her wealth never beat her poverty

Whenever she did good, she wouldn't say
'I did it,' nor was her sighing heard over it.
"I did this" nor would one hear her sigh

And she would show her neighbors that her abundance
She saw her many neighbors as few
Was little, and she called her abundance little.
And called her little much

And she thought it wrong to disobey her husband,
She saw disobeying a husband wrong
Yet when she was disobeyed, her reproach was slight.
And if she were disobeyed it was but a small calamity

So if the grave's niche knew who had come
If the blamed one in the grave knew tomorrow
To it, and whom her bier had brought to it,
Who came to her and who sent her bed

It would come to greet her warmly, and widen
She would go out to welcome her
Her bed around her when the mourning women cried.
When mourners cry, her bed sings praises

When the hands were shaken free of her, may it grow spacious
When hands left her side, she was generous to you
Around you, and may her light dispel its gloom from you.
Dispelling her sadness for you with her light

And whenever a visitor came to the grave, it would bring forth
Whenever a visitor came to her grave she would grow
Pasture on its surface; its depths shone.
Pasture on his back, lighting up her burrows

And when death came to her, they recounted after her passing
And when death came to her, they counted her virtues
Qualities of hers that had never been appraised [wording unclear].
Traits she didn't boast of

Whenever she entered a house, nothing
Floor-covering for its people but her mat.

And had virtues been cloth, there would have been
If morals were robes, Hind’s would be
For Hind, of all virtues, nothing but their silk.
Nothing but silk

So she departed, leaving a husband, as though
She passed from a family as though
For all his patience, her husband had been robbed of wealth.
Bereft of patient kinsmen’s wealth

So Hind's neighbors found no other neighbor
Hind’s neighbors found no substitute neighbor
To replace Hind, nor her little one a mother who sufficed.
Nor did her little mother become self-sufficient

And a little daughter was hurried beyond infancy [reading uncertain],
The young girl hurried to God while
In God's keeping, since her solace was lost with Hind.
Hind’s glory peaked

At the grave lamenting, women whose breasts are red,
Or red-breasted women stand keening at her grave

We are stirred to tears, though she was sparing
The elegies, if we did not weep for Hind—even the least of them.
Of weeping for Hind’s insignificant woes
