- أشكوا الهوى للأمل الخائبI complain of love to thwarted hope.
- أكان الهوى الا الدموع سوابقWas love anything but tears racing
- الليل أقبل والمنام حرامNight has come, and sleep is forbidden.
- أماه قومى واسمعىO mother, rise and listen.

- حبيبتي نحن قوم لا يغيرهمMy beloved, we are a people unchanged
- حياة حلوها مرA life whose sweetness is bitter,
- خليلي ما الهجران شيمة معشرO my two friends, desertion is not the way of a people
- دار الهوى وعلالة المتعللAbode of love, solace of the solace-seeker,
- زمن الأنس تولى وانقضىThe time of fellowship has passed away and ended,
- سلام عليها لا لقاء ولا ودPeace be upon her—no meeting, no affection,
- صبرا فؤادي صبراPatience, my heart, patience.

- كان ذاك الغرام سهلا وصعباThat passion was at once easy and hard:
- لعلك والآمال حيرى كليمةPerhaps you, while hopes are bewildered and wounded,
- ليلى طول ما له آخرMy night stretches on without end;
- مال عنى ومضىHe turned away from me and left,
- من ذا الذي عشق الخياWho is it who loved imagination
- منكد الحظ كثير الجلدIll-fated, with great fortitude,
- هيئوا لي في باطن الأرض قبراAnd leave me to sleep beneath the dust.
- وقفت تبكى وما من سامعShe stood weeping, with no one to hear
- ويك قلبي متى أراك صؤولاAlas for you, my heart! When shall I see you fierce in attack,
- يا حية تنساب في خاطريO serpent, slithering through my mind,
