nor a tear in the eye driven forth by longing.

And night hears from me a cry which, when it resounds,

makes the dead take fright, and thunder answers them.

And I come to have a soul that, when passion seeks it,

rebels, and a heart that is hard stone.

even if it held bliss, with bliss following in its wake.

Indeed, by a free man's oath—and God is witness—

tormenting longing and rejection have truly grown sweet to me.

So do not think that I bend with passion

and surrender my reins to the tears that appear.

Gone is the time when I was a brother to passion,

confiding in the stars of night while night was pitch-black,

and you, my heart, are neither a coward nor a knave.
