هدمت صبر الأسد الصابر
O serpent, slithering through my mind,
O snake slithering in my mind
You shattered the patient lion's patience.
You have crushed the patience of the steadfast lion

من قبل داراً للفتى الشاعر
You cast me into an abyss that had never been
You have thrown me into an abyss that was never before
A dwelling for the young poet before.
A home for the poetic youth

You made my glory fodder for passion;
You have made my glory a morsel for passion
Leave the path of glory to the passerby.
Calling the path of glory transient

فمن ترى بين الورى ناصري
For your sake, I turned against all mankind;
You have made me hostile to all creation
Who, then, do you see among mankind as my defender?
So who do you think in creation will support me?

Could I see the light of guidance after
You extinguished the light of truth in my eye?
You extinguished the light of truth in my sight?

طوعا لحب غادر جائر
In loving you, I defied my white hopes,
I disobeyed the white wishes in your love
In willing submission to a treacherous, unjust love.
Willingly submitting to wicked love

O essence of hopes, what is it
I can hope for tomorrow from my stumbling fortune?
That I hope for tomorrow from my stumbling fortune?

And you, O heart—will you not come to your senses?
And you, O heart, will you find peace
And you are not the heart of a debauched sinner.
When you are not the heart of a lewd deceiver?

اذfor ليسis not خافىthe hidden nature of الحسنbeauty كالظاهرlike the outward appearance
اذ ليس خافى الحسن كالظاهر
Beauty has deceived you, and within it lies death,
Beauty has tricked you though in it is demise
For beauty's hidden nature is unlike its outward show.
Since apparent beauty is not like the hidden

If beauty has led its people astray
Becomes a mote in the beholder's eye.
It becomes filth in the beholder's socket

You have been forsaken; so be the one who forsakes;
I was once abandoned so be an emigrant
For victory and happiness belong to the one who forsakes.
For victory and fortune belong to the emigrant

Do not grieve, and cast off the garment of passion,
Do not grieve, shed the garb of passion
And put on the cloak of flourishing hope.
And don the gown of glowing hope
