وهمسand whispering منone who يحلوis sweet لديهto him السهرstaying awake at night
وهمس من يحلو لديه السهر
Its melodies are lovers' kisses,
His melodies are the kisses of the passionate
And the whispers of one who finds wakefulness sweet,
And the whispers of those who love to stay up late
ونوحand lamentation محزونa grieving person شكاcomplained of همهhis sorrow
ونوح محزون شكا همه
يثيرstirs شكواهhis lament حفيفrustling of الشجرthe trees
يثير شكواه حفيف الشجر
And the lament of a grieving one who voiced his sorrow;
And the sad lament of one who complained of his worries
The rustling of trees stirs his lament.
Which makes the rustling of trees stir
يزيدهاadds to it البلبلthe nightingale منfrom لحنهits song
يزيدها البلبل من لحنه
ماwhatever شاءهwishes for it البلبلthe nightingale وقتat the time of السحرthe hour before dawn
ما شاءه البلبل وقت السحر
The nightingale adds to it from its song
The nightingale increases them with his tune
As much as the nightingale wishes in the hour before dawn.
Whatever the nightingale wants at dawn
أسرارهits secrets نجهلwe do not know مكنونهاtheir hidden contents
أسراره نجهل مكنونها
يهتكهاlays them bare البدرthe full moon إذاwhen ماemphatic particle سفرshines forth
يهتكها البدر إذا ما سفر
We do not know what its secrets conceal;
His hidden secrets we do not know
The full moon lays them bare when it shines forth.
Revealed by the moon when it travels
فيin هجعةslumber of الليلthe night ومنand from سرهits mystery
في هجعة الليل ومن سره
يستولدbrings forth الليلthe night عقولminds of البشرhumankind
يستولد الليل عقول البشر
In night's slumber, and from its mystery,
In the stillness of night and from his secret
Night brings forth the minds of humankind.
The night begets the minds of people
هلdoes يعجبmarvel العقلthe mind إذاwhen ماemphatic particle رأىsees
هل يعجب العقل إذا ما رأى
فيin ظلمةdarkness of الليلthe night شموسsuns of الفكرthought
في ظلمة الليل شموس الفكر
Does the mind marvel when it sees
Does the mind rejoice when it sees
Suns of thought in the darkness of night?
In the dark of night the suns of thought?
فيin صدرهits breast يهجعslumbers أهلpeople of التقىpiety
في صدره يهجع أهل التقى
ويسهرand stays awake الصبthe lovesick lover يناجىconfides in القمرthe moon
ويسهر الصب يناجى القمر
In its breast the devout slumber,
In his chest rest the people of piety
And the lovesick lover stays awake, confiding in the moon.
While the young stay up conversing with the moon
فيin صدرهits breast تضحكlaughs بنتdaughter of الهوىdesire
في صدره تضحك بنت الهوى
وضحكهاand her laughter عنوانa sign of ذاكthat الكدرsorrow
وضحكها عنوان ذاك الكدر
In its breast the daughter of desire laughs,
In his chest laughs the daughter of passion
And her laughter is a sign of that sorrow.
And her laugh is a sign of that distress
فيin صدرهits breast يقتلis killed منone who قدhas (perfect marker) رأىseen
في صدره يقتل من قد رأى
فيin عيشهhis life الضنكhardship وذاقand tasted الضجرweariness
في عيشه الضنك وذاق الضجر
In its breast is slain one who has seen
In his chest he kills those who have seen
Hardship in his life and tasted weariness.
In their life misery and tasted boredom
يخالهtakes it for السارقthe thief ثوباًa garment إذاwhen
يخاله السارق ثوباً إذا
رماهcasts it off تلقاهmeet him عيونeyes of البشرhumankind
رماه تلقاه عيون البشر
The thief takes it for a garment; when
He seems to the thief like a gown if
He casts it off, human eyes catch sight of him.
He casts it, it is picked up by people's eyes
ويجزعand quakes الصنديدthe valiant man خوفاin fear إذاwhen
ويجزع الصنديد خوفا إذا
رآهsees it ماemphatic particle بينamong القبورthe graves انتشرhas spread
رآه ما بين القبور انتشر
And the valiant man quakes with fear when
And the sentry cries out in fear when
He sees it spread among the graves.
He sees him spread out among the graves
يموتdies فيin اليومthe day ويحياand lives بهthrough it
يموت في اليوم ويحيا به
هلdoes يهزأscoff الليلthe night بحكمat the decree of القدرfate
هل يهزأ الليل بحكم القدر
It dies in the day and lives through it;
He dies in the day and lives through it
Does night scoff at the decree of fate?
