He has bidden hopes farewell, expecting
From them only rest within his grave.
مقطباًfrowning انif شمتهyou beheld him خلتهyou would think him
مقطباً ان شمته خلته
مستجمعاًgathering together ماwhat جالpassed فيthrough فكرهhis mind
مستجمعاً ما جال في فكره
Frowning—if you beheld him, you would think him
Gathering all that had passed through his mind.
يطلبhe seeks خلاa friend صادقاsincere واعياًunderstanding
يطلب خلا صادقا واعياً
يهديhe offers لهto him ماwhatever شاءhe wishes منof سرهhis secrets
يهدي له ما شاء من سره
He seeks a sincere, understanding friend
To whom he may offer whatever secrets he wishes.

يرنو إني أم جفاها الكرى

He searches for a breast that, should it enfold him,
Would wipe death's army from his breast.
