أَن تكوني يا بنتُ في الشقوات
If you are Aziza—the dear one—it is grievous
If you are dear then a dear one,
that you, my girl, should be in misery.
To be, O girl, among the fortunate,

And your face—the trace of sorrow upon it
And your smile is a touch of sorrow in it,
brings despair to hardened hearts—
Bringing down despair into hard hearts,

With languid, dreamy eyes,
within it radiate the light of life.

They cast her into abodes of disgrace—woe to them!
They brought her down to the abodes of disgrace,
Then they said, "She has become one of the debauched women."
Then said she had become one of the immoral ones,

They schemed against her, deceived her, and enticed her,
They disliked and deceived her and tempted her
and said, "She has become one of the ruined women."
And said she had become one of the doomed,

And they saw honor in their women if
to unearth it, they would count it among disgraces.
They dug it up, they'd count it among the disgraces,

عذرهنَّtheir excuse العمىblindness وقبحُand ugliness الصفاتof traits
عذرهنَّ العمى وقبحُ الصفات
They alone are her excuse; as for their women,
Her only excuse is them and their women,
their excuse is blindness and ugliness of character.
Their excuse is blindness and foul qualities,

صدع الحقُّ قارعُ المنكرات
I do not seek an excuse for her when
I do not expect any apology for her when
truth speaks out, assailing evil deeds.
The truth thunders, chastising the wicked ones,

Yet I see a difference there
Except that I see a difference here,
among forms of waywardness, setting erring women apart.
In temptations that distinguish the tempted ones,

And the depravity of bodies is less grave
And the corruption of bodies is easier
than the depravity of souls and affections.
Than corruption of souls and emotions,

And when the path is straight,
And if the path is even,
there is no excuse for stumbling on it.
Excuse on it ceases for stumbling,

Indeed, the worst depravity is that which shelters
The worst corruption is what is veiled
behind the veil of chastity within families.
By the veil of chastity in homes,

We are indeed in an age abounding
We are in an ignoble time,
with errors among the men who guide.
With misguidance among guiding men,

Among them, Aziza is like an offender,
Yet among them is the dear one like the guilty,
and they have no pardon for offenders.
And they have no mercy on offenders,

Every limb bleeds in me,
from the pricking of stinging, wounding barbs.

As she gazes like the shining star,
and walks with the lightness of gazelles.
And walks lightly like a gazelle,

With a figure slender as the sad branches

In the playground of the breeze,

She resembles the full moon in yellowish pallor and radiance,
She resembles the full moon in pallor and glow,
and mirrors the flowers in her smiles.
And emulates the flowers in smiles,

She is noble in speech and heart; when she smiles,
Free in speech and soul when she jests,
she reveals a pure mouth with spotless gums.
Jesting pure, immaculate,

She combines beauty of form and character,
She combines good nature and form,
so she is of good stock, a daughter of nobles.
She is perfect, the carpenter's daughter,

And it is forbidden that beauty be left to evil
and perish as prey to lusts.
And decreed prey to lusts,

Surely, the drowning man is pulled from the sea,
Only the drowning are rescued from the sea,
and a lifeline is lowered to him.
And the rope of salvation is lowered to them,

Only the sick return to health
if they treat him with healing remedies.
If they are treated with remedies,

Only the wretched are deterred from death
even if he longs for death.
Though yearning for demise,

This life is but a passing enjoyment;
This life is but comfort,
so spend it in righteousness and good deeds.
So spend it in good and virtues.
