and sipped from the cup of my affection

And sipped from the cup of affection

the wine of the intimate friend.

The wine of intimate vinegar

يطفىء النار اذا ما

هاجني الذكر الأليم

هاجني الذكر الأليم

He quenches the fire whenever

That extinguishes the fire when

painful remembrance stirs me.

The painful memories ignite me

قسوة الشوق القديم

He sends mercy that dispels

Who sends mercy to banish

the cruelty of old longing.

True to his promise, generous,

Loyal to his promise, generous

and steadfast in affection.

I am alone in the world,

I am in this world lonely

and people are my foes.

راقهم أن جد أمر

برق غدر لا يدوم

They were pleased that something had occurred—

They liked that the matter became

a flash of treachery that does not last.

A fleeting treachery

ورأيت الغدر نارا

ورأوا فيه النعيم

ورأوا فيه النعيم

And I saw treachery as fire,

And I saw the betrayal as fire

and they saw bliss in it.

And they saw in it bliss

هدموا بنيان ودى

وانمحت منه الرسوم

They demolished the edifice of my affection,

They destroyed the edifice of affection

and its traces were effaced.

And its features were erased

And the king of night is kind;

he is a tender mother to me.

bearing abundant good.

radiant, with a clear complexion.

Gleaming, unsullied

بعد أن كنت اليتيم

And through him my companions are many,

And through him many a friend

after I had been an orphan.
