- آتي يزيد بن هارون أدلجهI come to Yazid ibn Harun, journeying to him by night,
- أتيت بابك مرات لتأذن ليI came to your door many times, so you might admit me.
- أجارتنا إن التعفف بالياسO our neighbor, surely self-restraint through giving up hope,
- إذا اختلجت عيني رأت من تحبهWhenever my eye twitches, it sees the one it loves.
- إذا ما اتقيت على قرحةIf you take care to protect a sore,
- أزرت بجود علي خيفة العدمFear of destitution diminished Ali's generosity.
- ألا هل إلى ظل العقيق وأهلهAh, is there, to al-ʿAqīq’s shade and its people,
- العذر إن أنصفت متضحThe excuse is clear, if you judge fairly;
- اليوم جددت النعماء والمننToday, blessings and favors were renewed;
- أما ترون الثرياDo you not see the Pleiades,
- أي خير يرجو بنو الدهر في الدهرWhat good do the children of time hope for in time,
- أيها السائل قد بينتO questioner, I have made it clear—
- بيناهم سكن بحيرتهمWhile they were settled in their encampment,
- تخضب مروا دما نجيعاIt stains the flint with fresh, dark-red blood,
- تشبهت بالأعراب أهل التعجرفYou modeled yourself on the Bedouins, those haughty people;
- تفديك نفسي يطول يومMy soul would ransom you—a day drags on
- تكلم بالوحي البنان المخضبThe dyed fingers spoke through subtle signs,
- ثلاثة تشرق الدنيا ببهجتهمThree make the world shine with their splendor:
- دماء المحبين لا تعقلLovers’ blood goes uncompensated.
- رأت وضحا في مفرق الرأس راعهاShe saw a white patch at the parting of the hair, and it startled her.
- صدودك والهوى هتكا استتاريYour rejection and love tore away my concealment,
- طبع الكريم على وفائهThe noble man is faithful by nature,
- طللان طال عليهما الأمدTwo ruins over which long ages have passed,
- طلول ومغانيهاRuins and their dwelling places—
- عليم بأعقاب الأمور كأنماHe knows well the outcomes of affairs, as though
- فتى لما رأى الأنساب عزاA young man, when he saw honor in ancestry,
- فتى يتقي أن يخدش الذم عرضهEnglish translation unavailable
- فضلت مكارمه على الأقوامHis noble virtues surpassed those of all peoples,
- قد خلع الحسن على وجههBeauty has indeed bestowed upon his face
- قد كانت الأصنام وهي قديمةThe idols had long existed, ancient as they were;
- كأن الموت صادف منك غنماAs though Death had found in you a prize,
- ليهنك الزائر الجديدMay the new visitor bring you joy—
- مات الثلاثة لما مات مطلبThe three died when Muttalib died;
- ملك كأن الشمس فوق جبينهA king, as though the sun were above his brow,
- من يتم نى العمر فليدرعWhoever wishes for long life, let him armor himself
- نفوس المنايا بالمنايا تشعبThe souls of death are scattered by death;
- نم فقد وكلت بي الأرقاSleep, for you have set sleeplessness over me,
- هل الهم إلا كربة تتفرجIs worry anything but anguish that eases,
- وإني لأرجو الله حتى كأننيAnd I have such hope in God that it is as though I
- ودائع أسرار طوتها السرائرDeposits of secrets, folded away by inmost hearts,
- وليل في جوانبه فصولAnd a night, along whose sides lie stretches
- ومازلت استرعي لك الله غائباI have kept asking God to guard you in your absence,
- ومازلت مذ كنت في نعمةEver since I enjoyed your favor, I have never ceased
- يدل على أنني عاشقThat I am in love is shown
