كسرت وجدّعهنَّ إبراهيم
The idols had long existed, ancient as they were;
The idols, which were ancient, had indeed been
they were smashed, and Abraham mutilated them.
Broken, and Abraham had mutilated them.
ولديكَand in your keeping أصنامidols سلمنَremained safe منfrom الأذىharm
ولديكَ أصنام سلمنَ من الأذى

وصفَت لهنَ غضارةٌ ونعيم
Yet you have idols that escaped all harm,
And you have idols that have remained safe from harm,
their flourishing abundance and ease remaining undimmed.
And prosperity and bliss have been theirs, untroubled.

فقرٌ وأنتَ إذا هززت كريمُ
And for an idol in whose protection we may seek refuge,
And for an idol at whose side we seek refuge,
we have need—and when shaken, you are bountiful.
We have need—and you, when shaken, are generous.
