The dyed fingers spoke through subtle signs,

and, by God, the speechless one's plaint—how clearly he speaks!

Did the gesture of the fingertips and her face

both reveal to him the nature of the concealed thought?

And favorable expectations had indeed once proved fruitful,

so the one who looked back found his affair's outcome praiseworthy.

But when I pondered expectations, watching

the shifting of their two states—behold, they were lying.

You began with kindness; but when I gave thanks for it,

you grew hostile toward me, until I seemed a wrongdoer.

And every young man who faces calamities with his resolve

has a way to leave whoever has a way to leave him.

And can love strike down a noble man, while his heart

knows well what he undertakes and what he avoids?

I took my time until knowledge made it clear that I

am, with time, by turns rising and falling.

And I joined the ends of affairs to their beginnings,

and the pressure that turns arrow-shafts set them straight.

And I knew for certain that despair guards one's honor,

and that I shall close my eyes to grit whenever I desire.

Have you left me amid conjectures, discerning

the patterns of a matter, experimenting among them?

He draws me close—the one over whom I once chose you

for my affection; you keep me distant, so I do not draw near.

So, by God, my share of you—how it has been squandered

by your loss of affection for me, while affairs keep changing!

After you, shall I seek rain from a rain-cloud's lightning flashes,

even if a heavy-raining cloud with trailing fringes pours generously?

Whenever I saw lightning, I averted my eyes from it,

and whenever it flashed, I said, 'This lightning brings no rain.'

And if an opportunity came my way, I did not pursue it,

and turned away from it, fearing what I await.

I have learned to forsake hopeful expectation; I shall not be seen

returning to it, for time is a teacher.
