مات الثلاثةُ لما ماتَ مُطلبُ

مات الثلاثةُ لما ماتَ مُطلبُ

مات الحياءُ وماتَ الرعبُ والرهَبُ

مات الحياءُ وماتَ الرعبُ والرهَبُ

The three died when Muttalib died;

When Muttalib passed away, modesty died

Modesty died, and terror and awe died.

Fear and awe perished too.

للّهِ أربعةٌ قد ضمهُم كَفَنٌ

للّهِ أربعةٌ قد ضمهُم كَفَنٌ

أضحى يُعزّى به الاسلامُ والعَرَبُ

أضحى يُعزّى به الاسلامُ والعَرَبُ

By God, a single shroud has enfolded four;

For Allah, four were shrouded in one funeral cloth-

Islam and the Arabs are now offered condolences for him.

Now Islam and the Arabs mourn them.

يا يومَ مُطّلِبٍ أبكيتَ أعيُنِنا

يا يومَ مُطّلِبٍ أبكيتَ أعيُنِنا

بعدَ الدموع دَماً ما دامَت الحقَبُ

بعدَ الدموع دَماً ما دامَت الحقَبُ

O day of Muttalib, you made our eyes weep

O day of Muttalib, you made our eyes weep,

blood after tears, for as long as the ages endure.

Then bleed, for as long as eras continue.

فاذهب ذهابَ غوادي المزنِ ما سَفَحَت

فاذهب ذهابَ غوادي المزنِ ما سَفَحَت

صَوباً على الأرض أوما اخضرَّت العُشُبُ

صَوباً على الأرض أوما اخضرَّت العُشُبُ

So depart as morning rainclouds depart, as long as they pour

So pass away like the floods of rain-fed valleys that poured

rain upon the earth, or as long as the grasses grow green.

Onto the earth before the grass turned green.
