Sleep, for you have set sleeplessness over me,

Carefree, you set it upon one in love.

Of my body you have left only

A shadow, unlike the form once created.

I was like the waning of a moon,

Erasing the fullness it had gained.

And a youth called to you from close by,

His entrails set ablaze with anguish.

    His eye drowned in tears,

So its pupil cried, 'I am drowning!'

    You punished his eye only

If it cast a furtive glance again.

One whose charms are perfect has no right

To treat a gazer's eye as an enemy.

Yours is to show us beauty,

And ours to put our eyes to work.

Your hands struck the flint of passion

In the heart's dark core, and it caught fire.
