أجارتناO our neighbor إنsurely التعفُفَself-restraint بالياسthrough giving up hope
أجارتنا إن التعفُفَ بالياس
وصبراًand patience علىin استِدرارdrawing forth a yield دُنياthe world بأبسَاسِwith gentle coaxing
وصبراً على استِدرار دُنيا بأبسَاسِ
O our neighbor, surely self-restraint through giving up hope,
Patience in deprivation pleases the noble soul
and patience in milking the world with gentle coaxing,
And perseverance in gaining life's possessions
جَديرانِboth are apt أنthat لاnot يَبدَءَاthey both begin بمذلّةِwith humiliation
جَديرانِ أن لا يَبدَءَا بمذلّةِ
كريماًa noble man وأنand that لاnot يُحوِجَاهُthey both make him need الىto النّاسِpeople
كريماً وأن لا يُحوِجَاهُ الى النّاسِ
are both apt not to bring humiliation upon
The dignified would not begin with humiliation
a noble man, nor make him dependent on others.
Nor would the generous need to plead with people
وليand I have مُقلَةٌan eye تنفيexpels القَذىspecks عنfrom جُفونهاits eyelids
ولي مُقلَةٌ تنفي القَذى عن جُفونها
وتأخذُand takes منfrom إيحاشdesolation دهرِtime بأيناسِwith solace
وتأخذُ من إيحاش دهرِ بأيناسِ
And I have an eye that clears specks from its lids,
My eyelids sweep away the grit in my eyes
and draws solace from time's desolation.
And take from the shame of time some spears
أجارَتناO our neighbor إنsurely القِداحthe lot-casting arrows كواذبٌlying
أجارَتنا إن القِداح كواذبٌ
واكثرُand most أسبابِmeans النجاحِof success معwith اليَاسِgiving up hope
واكثرُ أسبابِ النجاحِ مع اليَاسِ
O our neighbor, surely the lot-casting arrows lie,
Patience protects us, goblets tell lies
and most means of success come with giving up hope.
And most means of success come with despair
