آتيI come to يَزيدَYazid بنَson of هارونٍHarun أدلجهُI journey to him by night
فيin كلِevery يومٍday وماليand what have I to do وابنwith the son of هارونِHarun
I come to Yazid ibn Harun, journeying to him by night,
Yazid son of Haroun comes to me every day
Every day—yet what have I to do with Ibn Harun?
While I have no desire for him, son of Haroun
فليتَso, if only ليfor me بيزيدِin place of Yazid حينَwhen أشهَدُهI attend him
راحاًwine وقصفاًand revelry وندماناًand a drinking companion يُسلِّينيwho entertains me
If only I had, in place of Yazid when I attend him,
I wish I had Yazid when I see him
Wine, revelry, and a drinking companion to entertain me.
Relaxed, dignified, regretful, consoling me
I go in the morning الىto عُصبةٍa band صُمتhave grown deaf مسامعُهمtheir ears
عنto الهُدىguidance بينbetween زنديقٍa heretic ومأفُونِand a fool
I go in the morning to a band whose ears are deaf
I wake up to a group who are deaf to guidance
To guidance, ranging from heretic to fool.
Among heretics and debauched souls
لاnot يذكرونَthey mention علياًAli فيin مشاهِدهمtheir gatherings
ولاnor بنيهhis sons بنيsons of البيضِthe fair ones الميامينِthe blessed ones
They do not mention Ali in their gatherings,
They do not mention Ali in their gatherings
Nor his sons, sons of the fair and blessed.
Nor his pure and innocent sons
اللهُGod يعلمُknows أنيthat I لاnot أحبُّهمI love them
كماjust as هُمthey بيقينٍcertainly لاnot يُحبونيthey love me
God knows that I do not love them,
God knows I do not love them
Just as they certainly do not love me.
Just as they certainly do not love me
لوif يستطيعونَthey are able عنbecause of ذكريmy mentioning أباAbu (father of) حَسَنٍHasan
وفَضلهand his merit قطَّعونيthey would cut me to pieces بالسكاكينِwith knives
If they could, for my mentioning Abu Hasan
If they could, they would cut me to pieces
And his merit, they would cut me to pieces with knives.
To stop me praising Abu Hassan and his virtues
ولستُand I am not أتركُI abandon تفضيليmy preference لهfor him أبداًever
حتىuntil المماتِdeath علىin رَغمdefiance of الملاعينthe accursed
And I will never abandon my preference for him,
But I will never stop preferring him
Until death, in defiance of the accursed.
Until death, despite the cursed ones
