Is worry anything but anguish that eases,

with a sequel toward which it is driven and impelled?

Is time anything but a turmoil that then clears

soon, or else a constriction that eases?

And time is only a return like what has gone before,

and life is only freshness that then wears out.

And how can I watch for lightning when the lightning brings no rain,

and its gleaming early splendor [uncertain reading] tempts me?

And how can I remain patient when I am not helpless,

nor is livelihood barred, nor am I hemmed in?

Ah, at times [uncertain reading], patient endurance has been humiliation,

and nearer to the condition that is uglier.

And does a young man bear worry when he is pledged

to travel by night—a tireless traveler at dusk, setting out in darkness?

And there is no call for patience while a pursuit offers recourse against time,

and night travel is possible and a path lies open.

What bars me from madly closing my eyes upon grit

is my certainty that no hardship will go unrelieved.

I trace lines on the surface of the mat as though I were

a captive afraid of being killed, though worry can be relieved.

If I am in need of forbearance, I am indeed

more in need of rashness at certain times.

And I have a horse for forbearance, bridled with forbearance,

and I have a horse for rashness, saddled with rashness.

So whoever wishes to straighten me will find me straight,

and whoever seeks to bend me will find me bent.

And I would not accept rashness as a confidant and companion,

but I accept it when I am driven into a corner.

Indeed, at times the open expanse grows cramped for its inhabitants,

yet a way out is possible between the spearheads.

And a deadly ordeal may be ridden into

when there is nowhere to turn except toward it.

And if some people say there is ugliness in it,

they have spoken truly—but humiliation is uglier for a free man.
