- أإخواننا لم غير الدهر عهدكمO our brothers, why has time altered your pledge?
- أبا عامر أنت الحبيب إلى قلبيAbu ʿAmir, you are dear to my heart,
- أخفيت سقمي حتى كاد يخفينيI hid my sickness until it nearly hid me.
- أخو العلم حي خالد بعد موتهThe learned man lives on after his death,
- إذا سألوني عن حالتيWhen they ask me about my state,
- أرى الحمام موعظة وذكرىI see the bathhouse as an admonition and a reminder
- إلهي إني شاكر لك حامدMy God, I am grateful to You and praise You.
- إليك أفر من ذلي وذنبيTo you I flee from my humiliation and my sin.
- أما إنه لولا الدموع الهوامعIndeed, were it not for the streaming tears,
- أمرت إلهي بالمكارم كلهاYou enjoined every noble virtue, my God,
- أمكة تفديك النفوس الكرائمO Mecca, may noble souls be your ransom,
- أنت وسط ما بين ضدين يا إنYou are midway between two opposites, O hu-
- أهلا بين كالنهود حوالكWelcome, pale hairs like the breasts of dusky women,
- أيا قمرا في وجنتيه نعيمO moon, whose cheeks hold bliss,
- أيا ممرضا جسمي بأجفانه المرضىO you who sicken my body with your languid eyelids,
- بماذا أكافئ ندبا كسانيHow shall I repay a noble man who clothed me
- تأوبه من همه ما تأوباHis cares returned to haunt him in the night,
- تتيه وقد أيقنت أتك ممكنYou strut in pride, though you know with certainty that you are contingent;
- تجوهرك الأدنى عنيت بحفظهYou took care to preserve your lower essence,
- ترى ليلنا شابت نواصيه كبرةYou see our night—its forelocks have grown white with age,
- حلفت بثغر قد حمى ريقه العذباI swore by a mouth whose sweet saliva was guarded,
- خليلي ما للريح أضحى نسيمهاMy beloved, why has the breeze of the wind
- خليلي هل تقضى لبانة هائمMy two friends, will a lovesick wanderer's wish be fulfilled,
- سل الهموم إذا نبا زمنDispel cares when time turns hostile,
- صاح نبه كل صاح يصطبعO friend, rouse every sober man to drink at dawn
- ضمان على عينيك أنني هائمMy eyes guarantee that I am infatuated
- طربت فأطربت الخليل إلى الذيYou were enraptured, and stirred your friend to delight in what
- طيف سرى من خاطر القلب الذويA phantom stole by night from the withered heart’s imaginings;
- عسى عطفة ممن جفاني يعيدهاPerhaps the one who shunned me will renew a gesture of affection,
- عندي مشكود من الخمر عبقI have a fragrant gift of wine.
- فؤادي قريح قد جفاه اصطبارهMy heart is wounded; its patient endurance has forsaken it.
- قل لقوم لا يتوبونSay to people who do not repent
- قل للذي غص في بحر من الفكرSay to him who dived into a sea of thoughts
- قم نصطبح من قهوة بكرRise, let us drink virgin wine at dawn,
- لعلكم بعد التجنب والهجرPerhaps, after avoidance and estrangement,
- لعمري لقد شرفت ودي بثلبهBy my life, you have honored my affection by disparaging it,
- للمرء في أيامه عبرA person finds lessons in his days,
- نبه الليل بالوجيف ولا تولعRouse the night with swift trotting, and do not grow
- نفسي الفداء لجؤذرٍ حلو اللمىMy soul be ransom for a young oryx with sweet, dusky lips,
- نفسي فداء كتاب حاز كل منىMy soul is sacrificed for a book that gained all my wishes
- هم سلبوني حسن صبري إذا بانواThey robbed me of my fair patience when they departed,
- وأدهم من آل الوجيه ولاحقAnd a black steed of the stock of al-Wajih and Lahiq,
- وأقب من آل الوجيه ولاحقAnd a lean-flanked steed of the line of al-Wajih and Lahiq,
- وذات عمى لها طرف بصيرAnd a blind one has an eye that sees;
- وما دارنا إلا موات لو أنناAnd our abode is nothing but death, if only we
- يا رب ليل قد هتكت حجابهAh, many a night's veil have I torn
- يا منظرا إن رمقت بهجتهO sight, if you glance upon its splendor
- يا واصفا ربه بجهلO you who describe your Lord in ignorance,
