فباتso he spent the night علىupon جمرthe embers of الأسىsorrow متقلباtossing and turning
His cares returned to haunt him in the night,
He suffered from worries that made him suffer,
and he spent the night tossing on sorrow's embers.
So he spent the night tossing and turning in the embers of sorrow.

عواصفُgusts of ريحthe wind of الشوقlonging حتىuntil تصيباthey poured rain
On the morning they departed, his eyes' rainclouds were milked
The morning after eyes heavy with tears,
by gusts of longing's wind, until they poured.
As storms of longing blew until striking them.

Tears tore the veil from hidden anguish,
Tears that uncovered the secret hidden anguish,
and revealed what lay concealed of love's secret.
Revealing from the secret of passion what was concealed.
خليليmy two friends ماwhat ليis with me كلَّماwhenever لاحflashed بارقlightning

My two friends, what ails me, that whenever lightning flashes,
My friend, why is it whenever lightning flashes,
I remember lightning at al-Aqiq, and Zaynab?
I'm reminded of lightning at Al-Aqeeq where Zainab lies.
أؤيسُI cause to despair بالنائينthrough those far away نوماًsleep مشرداdriven away
وأُطمِعand I give hope to بالثاوينthrough those who remain قلباًa heart معذباtormented
Through those far away I drive fugitive sleep to despair,
Hopeless with those distant I sleep displaced,
and through those who remain I give a tormented heart hope.
And hope with those settled a tortured heart.

Who will restore my reason, when separation presses hard
Who can mend my robe when resolved is my intent,
upon it, and rejoin the cord lest it be severed?
And tie together the rope so it knots again.
أفيis it at كلevery حينmoment أمتريI draw forth غَربَthe torrent of tears of مقلةan eye
أبيrefused الوجدُlonging إلاanything but أنthat تجودit give freely فتغرباand then it overflow
Must I, at every moment, draw forth an eye's torrent,
Always must I walk the foreign lands of exile,
when longing insists it yield freely and overflow?
Refusing comfort unless you too are exiled.
إذاwhenever عنَّappeared ليto me ظبيa gazelle بوجرةat Wajra
شادنa young gazelle تكرتُI recalled منthe one who عَنّىwearied الفؤادَthe heart وعذباand tormented
Whenever a gazelle at Wajra appears before me,
When a gazelle turned away, ignoring me,
a young one—I recall the one who wearied and tormented my heart.
My heart was tortured and so punished by being ignored.
وارتاحand rejoiced للأرواحin the breezes منfrom نحوthe direction of أرضهاher land
ونثنىand turned عِنانيmy rein للصباtoward youthful passion نفحةa breath of الصباthe east wind
And my heart rejoices in breezes from her land,
And my soul found rest, inclining homeward,
and a breath of the east wind bends my reins toward youthful passion.
My reigns slackened by a youthful breeze.
ولولاand were it not for التهابُthe blazing of الشوقlonging بينbetween جوانحيmy ribs
لأمرعَwould grow lush خديmy cheek بالدموعwith tears وأعشباand sprout grass
And were it not for longing's blaze within my ribs,
If not for burning longing within my chest,
my cheek would grow lush with tears and sprout grass.
My cheek would flow with tears until overgrown.
ألاAh! قاتلَmay slay اللَهGod الهوىlove كيفhow قادنيit led me
إلىto مَصرَعيmy doom طوعاًwillingly وقدthough indeed كنتI had been مُصعَباunruly
Ah, may God slay love! How it led me
Oh how Allah hates passion, leading me
willingly to my doom, though I had been unruly!
To my demise willfully though difficult it was.

And I never feared I would spend the night tormented
I had not feared I would be tortured
by the sweet saliva of one who guarded a cool, white-toothed mouth,
By the sweet pain from fevered lips that stung.

and by a cheek—before smelling its gardens, I encounter
And a cheek whose down below inhaling fragrance
an Indian sword from the gaze, and a scorpion for a sidelock.
Was Indian, though the cheekbone scorpion-stung.

Have you truly not seen a lightning flash gleam,
You seemed not to notice a flashing light
long-fringed, gathering vigor on the horizon's heights?
That brought vitality to the horizon’s curve.
