Abu ʿAmir, you are dear to my heart,
O Abu Amir, you are the beloved to my heart, even if I spent an age enduring your reproach.
Though I have long been in distress from your reproach.
Do you turn away even as a phantom in my slumber, and withhold even a greeting sent with the travelers?

وتبخَلُ حتّى بالسلامِ مع الركب
Do you turn away even in dreams, at the hour of sleep,
As if I were a sinner being punished for his crime, yet I had no crime other than my affection.
And withhold even a greeting sent with the caravan?
O angry one, is there any return to contentment? O distant one, is there any path to closeness?
كأنّيas though I أخوone guilty of ذنبٍa sin يجازىis punished بذنبِهfor his sin
كأنّي أخو ذنبٍ يجازى بذنبِه
وماand not كانwas ليmine غيرَother than المودةaffection منany ذنبِsin
وما كان لي غيرَ المودة من ذنبِ
As though I were a sinner punished for his sin,
O Garden of Paradise, do enemies cut me off from your sealed red wine or your sweet fresh water?
Though I have had no sin but affection.
O you whose departure took my solace away, leaving me stripped of resolve and heart.

ويا نازحاً هل من سبيلٍ إلى القربِ
So, O angry one, is there any return to goodwill?
Let me taste, through your grace, the harvest of the bees, for you have made me swallow bitterness through your blame.
And O distant one, is there any way to nearness?
I used to deem abandonment the greatest calamity, yet compared to true separation, it has become the least of troubles.

And O garden of Paradise, can the distance be crossed
I shall make a festival of the day you return, where your face becomes the prayer-direction for this wandering lover.
With your pearl-adorned wine, or your sweet water?
I will raise the banner of reunion in the realm of youth, sacrificing thereby my lovesickness and distress.

And O departed one, with whose departure solace departed,
The heart is yours, holding no dwelling for another; I have granted it to you, so dwell in it with ease and welcome.
I have become bereft of resolve and heart.

Graciously let me taste, through reconciliation, the bees’ harvest,
For you have made me swallow bitter sap through reproach.

I once thought estrangement the greatest calamity;
Yet beside parting, it has become one of the slightest woes.

Your face becomes the qibla of the bewildered, lovesick lover.

I shall raise reunion’s banner in the raiment of youth,
On that day, and sacrifice my yearning and anguish.

The heart is yours; within it no one else has a dwelling.
I have given it to you: dwell there in ease and welcome.
