عندي مشكودٌ من الخمر عَبِق
فيهin it مُنىthe wishes of مُصطَبحٍa morning drinker ومُغتَبِقand an evening drinker
فيه مُنى مُصطَبحٍ ومُغتَبِق
I have a fragrant gift of wine.
In it lie the wishes of morning and evening drinkers.
يحكيresembles شذاthe fragrance of المسكmusk إذاwhen المسكthe musk فُتِقis unsealed
يحكي شذا المسك إذا المسك فُتِق
كأَنَّهُas though it منfrom خُلقِكyour character الحُلوsweet خُلِقwas created
كأَنَّهُ من خُلقِك الحُلو خُلِق
It rivals musk's fragrance when the musk is unsealed.
As though it were created from your sweet character.
كأنَّماas though كؤوسهits cups تحتbeneath الغسقthe dusk
كأنَّما كؤوسه تحت الغسق
فيin راحةthe palm of الساقيthe cupbearer نجومٌstars تأتَلقglitter
في راحة الساقي نجومٌ تأتَلق
As though its cups beneath the dusk
were glittering stars in the cupbearer's palm.
تخالهاyou imagine them وهيwhile they تلظّىblaze كالحَرَقlike fire
تخالها وهي تلظّى كالحَرَق
أحشاءَthe entrails of صبٍّa lovesick lover ملئتwere filled منwith الحُرقburning anguish
أحشاءَ صبٍّ ملئت من الحُرق
You would think them, blazing like fire,
the entrails of a lover, filled with burning anguish.
ترىyou see لدىat المزجthe mixing إذاwhen الماءthe water اندفقpours forth
ترى لدى المزج إذا الماء اندفق
فيهاin them حباباًbubbles لاحgleamed كالدرlike pearls النسقstrung in order
فيها حباباً لاح كالدر النسق
At the mixing, when the water pours in, you see
bubbles within them, gleaming like strung pearls.
وأنتand you أُنسيmy solace والمفدّىand the one ransomed بالحَدَقwith eyes
وأنت أُنسي والمفدّى بالحَدَق
فأطلعso rise طلوعthe rising of القمرthe moon التمِّfull اتَّسقbecame complete
فأطلع طلوع القمر التمِّ اتَّسق
And you are my solace, for whom eyes are offered in ransom.
So rise as the full moon rises when complete,
فيon يومناour day هذاthis إذاwhen الظهرnoon نطقspoke
في يومنا هذا إذا الظهر نطق
ياO راشداًRashid (rightly guided) إذاwhen دجىthe darkness of الغيِّerror غسقdeepened
يا راشداً إذا دجى الغيِّ غسق
on this day of ours, when noon speaks.
O Rashid, when error's darkness deepens,
ياO راشداًRashid (rightly guided) قدindeed حازwon فيin السَبقِthe race السَبَقthe prize
يا راشداً قد حاز في السَبقِ السَبَق
للَهfor God (in admiration) معنىًa meaning طابقmatched أسماa name لكyours حقrightly due
للَه معنىً طابق أسما لك حق
O Rashid, who has won the prize in the race.
By God, what a meaning, matching a name rightly yours—
توافقاًin harmony فيكin you إذاwhen الاسمُthe name اتفقagreed
توافقاً فيك إذا الاسمُ اتفق
in harmony in you, when the name agrees.
