- أبا الحسن استمع مقال فتىO Abu al-Husn, listen to a young man's words:
- أبا المظفر أنت المجتبى لهدىO Abu al-Muzaffar, you are the chosen one for guidance
- إذا جاءني يوما نعي أبي الوحشIf one day news of Abu al-Wahsh's death reaches me,
- أرى الراية الصفراء يريم اصطفاقهاI see the yellow banner, its fluttering targeting
- أفاض الندى فوق الغنى للمسالمHe poured forth bounty beyond need upon those at peace with him;
- أقبل ذو دولة فقالواA man of power approached, and they said,
- العزم ينفذ ليس البيض والسمرResolve pierces through—not bright swords or dusky spears.
- الله أكبر أرض القدس قد صفرتGod is greatest! The land of Jerusalem has become empty
- إلهي أجرني من شرور بني نوعيMy God, protect me from the evils of my own kind.
- أؤمل لقياكم وإن شطت النوىI hope to meet you, though the distance is great.
- أيا ملكا أفنى العداة حسامهO king whose keen sword has annihilated the foes,
- بذلت وقتا للطب كي لاI devoted my time to medicine, lest I
- تصاريف دهر أعربت لمن اهتدىTime's vicissitudes spoke plainly to those who found guidance,
- جلا منيرا مقامه سنى لهجHis station shone forth, radiant with the light of one devoted to praise.
- حاول مفازك قبل أن يتحولاStrive for your deliverance before it changes.
- حبيب تراءى وهو يأبى لثامهA beloved appeared though he refused his veil
- حمى المسجد الأقصى فطال مطهراHe protected al-Aqsa Mosque, and it rose high as a place of purification.
- خبرت بني عصري على البسط والقبضI tested my contemporaries in ease and constraint,
- رفاهية الشهم اقتحام العظائمThe noble-hearted man's ease is to storm great undertakings,
- سألتك يا وهاب بالآية الكبرىI beseech You, O Bestower, by the greatest sign,
- سبا بالحسام العضب كل منازعHe captured every rival with the keen sword,
- عجبا من أحبابنا وانقياديHow wondrous are our loved ones—and my submission,
- فأبخس شيء حكمة عند جاهلSo wisdom is the least prized thing to an ignorant man,
- في باطن الغيب ما رلا تدرك الفكرIn the depths of the unseen lies what thoughts cannot grasp.
- في مشرق المجد نجم الدين مطلعهIn glory's east lies Najm al-Din's rising-place;
- فيا ملكا لم يبق للدين غيرهSo, O king, the faith has no one left but you;
- قالوا نراك عن الأكابر تعرضThey said, “We see you turning away from the great,
- قالوا نرى نفرا عند الملوك سمواThey said: We see some men who have risen high at kings' courts,
- قديم هواكم في الفؤاد قرارهMy age-old love for you has its dwelling in the heart;
- كليني لكر الخيل يا أم مالكLeave me to the horses’ charge, O Umm Malik;
- كن عزيزا أو عز عما يعزBe noble—or do without whatever is dear.
- لا تصدق عليك عقد صداقDo not ratify a dower contract that binds you;
- لقد أوسع الله الفتوح بعامناGod has indeed made conquests abundant in our year,
- مستنقذ القدس ثاره حبا منحاThe avenger of Jerusalem, his passion erupted in love
- من لم يسل عنك فلا تسألنWhoever does not ask after you—never ask
- هي العزائم لا بيض وخرصانIt is firm resolve, not gleaming swords and spears;
- وصفراء لولا نفحها ومذاقهاAnd a golden wine—were it not for its fragrance and taste,
- وليلة الربوة الشماء معلمةAnd a night on lofty al-Rabwa is memorable;
- وهل ثم نفس لا تميل إلى الهوىAnd is there a soul that does not incline toward desire?
- يا زائرا جنبات الشام معتبراO visitor to the reaches of al-Sham, reflecting,
- يا ساهرا في اقتناء علمO you who stay awake acquiring knowledge,
- يا منقذ القدس من أيدي جبابرةO deliverer of Jerusalem from the hands of tyrants,
