O deliverer of Jerusalem from the hands of tyrants,
who had sworn by the Lord's arm that you would enter it.
فَأَكذَبواso they belied كِذبَهُمtheir lies فيin وَصفِdescribing رَبِّهِمtheir Lord
وَصَدَقَand came true الوَعدُthe promise مَأموناًsecure مُحَوَّلُهُits alteration
Thus they belied their own lies in describing their Lord,
and the promise came true, secure against alteration.

Have you not seen Ibn Ayyub shoulder what
Time and its people find exhausting to bear?

The Franks rose up, though his deadly assault had broken their strength,
and summoned every man whose advance was feared.

When he captured Jerusalem, they said, 'How can we leave her,
while the Lord is in a pit within her that represents him?'

How many a king of theirs cleft the seas by night,
to defend the tomb, while the fates forsook it!

And how many a legion of theirs journeyed through deserts,
its journey casting it into the khawāmiʿ [unclear term]!

They cried to their kin for help, while contagion tore them apart,
and amassed wealth, while battle turned it into booty.

They are moths, struck down by the blaze of war;
and the more they persist in assault, the greater their slaughter.

A sword before Palestine cut down nations
beyond the seas—its polisher had indeed honed it.

without a blow or spear-thrust to scatter it!

Merely the name of Salah al-Din is mentioned in
the enemy's army, and the thought of him takes them captive.
