Be noble—or do without whatever is dear.
Be dignified, or turn away from what is hard to attain;
You will be relieved of the company of a clinging sorrow.
You will find relief from the bond of a clinging worry.
وَاِسرَحَand let roam القَلبُthe heart فيin المَقدِسِthe Holy City بِالمَسin the mos- (mosque, continued)

And let the heart roam through Jerusalem, in the Mas—
And let the heart roam in the Holy City, in the mos-
—jid al-Aqsa; there, give the trunk a shake.
que of al-Aqsa; there the trunk is shaken.

عَينِ سَلوانَ حَيثُ بورِكَ نَزُّ
And water it whenever it complains of thirst, from—
And give it drink whenever it complains of burning thirst, from
Silwan’s spring, where its trickling flow was blessed.
the spring of Silwan, where the seeping water was blessed.
فَبِسَلوانَfor, through Silwan رَيُّهُits thirst-quenching لاnot سِواهُanything other than it
فَبِسَلوانَ رَيُّهُ لا سِواهُ

وَهوَ يَنفي عَنهُ كُلوماً تَحَزُّ
For in Silwan alone lies its quenching,
For its thirst is quenched by Silwan, by nothing else,
and it drives from the heart wounds that cut deep.
And it banishes the wounds that lacerate the heart.
فَاِغسِلِso wash القَلبَthe heart بِالسُلُوِّwith forgetfulness إِلىuntil أَنthat
فَاِغسِلِ القَلبَ بِالسُلُوِّ إِلى أَن
لاnot تَراهُyou see it بِحادِثٍby an event يُستَفَزُّbeing agitated
لا تَراهُ بِحادِثٍ يُستَفَزُّ
So wash the heart with solace until—
So wash the heart in forgetfulness until
you see it no longer provoked by anything that befalls.
You no longer see it shaken by any event.
