    Leave me to the horses’ charge, O Umm Malik;

for weariness is only on the backs of neighing steeds.

For battle’s sea—had the swimming steeds not carried

us out—was a deep whose shore we would not have reached.

So do not, O Hind, seek me a graceful bride who captivates

with a sash’s speech or with anklets’ silence.

For trailing hems above veils do not delight me,

but steeds beneath clouds of battle dust.

For ruin lies only in the bosoms of full-breasted maidens,

and dominion only in the points of lances.

And no king like Yusuf will come in later times,

just as no equal of his came among the ancients.

A young man who rode terrors as steeds, whose saddles

are firm resolves, fastened at the withers for steadfastness.
