تِلكَthat العَزيمَةُresolve مِنهاfrom it هَذِهِthis الأَثَرُthe result
Resolve pierces through—not bright swords or dusky spears.
That is resolve; from it comes this result.

A conquest that constricts unbelief's breast, yet opens wide
the breast of guidance; its glad tidings and warnings met.

It is like clouds whose thunderbolts strike
one land, while their rain descends upon another.

As though Egypt and Tyre were the wall, its inner face
among us, its outer face among them for their unbelief.

But for King Salah al-Din, it would not have been long
before crosses and images were worshipped in Egypt.

So he sealed her breach and pressed on, making for
the enemy's land; victory there was not long in coming.

The Muslims' joy makes the watered steel weep, just as
a garment takes scent from a rose while it is pressed.

Their great men came, encountering defiance;
so abasement clothed that pride and greatness.

They donned armor so their armor might repel the assault;
yet no shield repels what fate has hurled.

The accursed one, hard pressed, faced al-Dawarum,
his back toward the cleaving swords and spears.

As though Murri, bewailing his bitter calamity, were
a log dripping water while it blazes.
ماnot كانَhad يَحسَبُthought أَنَّthat اللَهُGod يَقهَرُهُwould vanquish him
مِنfrom مِصرَEgypt إِذfor هِيَshe أُنثاهُhis female وَلاand not ذَكَرُa male
He had not thought that God would vanquish him
from Egypt, for she was his female, not a male.
قَدindeed كانَhe had been ذاpossessed of طَمَعٍgreed فيهاfor her وَذاand possessed of طُعَمٍmorsels
فَعادَso he returned يَأساًin despair وَبَأَساًand distress صَوبُهُhis downpour دِرَرُstreaming abundantly
He had coveted her and taken morsels from her;
so he returned in despair and distress, his rain streaming down.
فَلَيسَso he does not يَدريknow أَيَبكيwhether he should weep شَجوَthe grief of مَملَكَةٍa kingdom

So he knows not whether to weep in grief for a kingdom
that escaped him, or in fear of what he dreads and awaits.
وَغَزَّةٌand Gaza غَرَّةٌthe bright brow of الكُفرِunbelief الَّذيwhich وَطِئتُI trampled

And Gaza, the bright brow of unbelief—I trampled
its forehead—the Ghuzz left no trace of her.

The two forbidden streams flowed in her, surging together:
blood and wine—yet no unbelief and no drunkenness.
وَأُضرِمَتand she was set ablaze لَهَباًinto flame فيهِin it العِدىthe enemies جُثَثاًas corpses

And she was set ablaze, with enemies' corpses in the flames,
as though she were Saqar while they burned within her.

So praise be to God! This blessing has embraced
faith and worldly life: no excuse and no dread.

O Abu al-Muzaffar, enjoy the lot of one chosen
in time's latter days for a faith nearly cut off.
زَهِدتَyou had no desire فيماfor what سَبىcaptivated الأَملاكُthe kings مُنكَدِراًtainted

عِلماًknowing بِمُلكِof a realm of نَعيمٍbliss ماno بِهِin it كَدَرُtaint
You renounced what enthralled kings, tainted as it was,
knowing a realm of bliss with no taint in it.
وَطِبتَand you were content نَفساًin spirit عَنِaway from الدُنياthe world وَزُخرُفَهاand its glitter

And you gladly relinquished the world and its glitter,
and I came; you lead the way where terror and danger lie.

You are a third beside the two Umars in piety,
and in resolve, through which guidance's life grew young.
