- أخي خل حيز ذى باطلMy brother, leave the realm of one given to falsehood,
- إذا شرق المريخ من أرض بابلWhen Mars rises from the land of Babylon,
- أساجية الجفون أكل خودO languid-eyed one, has every maiden
- اسمع بني وصيتي واعمل بهاListen, my son, to my counsel, and act upon it.
- اعتصام الورى بمعرفتكAll creation finds refuge in knowing You.
- أقام رجالا في معارجه ملكاAs sovereign, He raised men upon His paths of ascent,
- أكاد أجن مما قد أجنI nearly go mad from what I keep concealed.
- الطب حفظ صحة برء مرضMedicine is preserving health and curing disease,
- اللّّه يشفي وينفي ما بجبهتهMay God heal him and remove what is on his forehead
- أما أصبحت عن ليل التصابيMy youth has passed as the night faded,
- أنا ثكلان لفقدتها فلمI am bereaved at her loss; so why
- أوليتني نعمة مذ صرت تلحظنيYou have bestowed a favor on me since you began to look upon me,
- بدأت بسم الله في نظم حسنI began in God's name to compose fine verse,
- تعس الزمان فإن في أحشائهAlas for the times, for in their womb
- تكلم في خصالك كل عيEvery tongue-tied person spoke of your virtues;
- تنهنه وحاذر أن ينالك بغتةHold back, and beware lest you be struck unawares
- خفيت على الجهال أعلام الهدىThe signposts of guidance were hidden from the ignorant,
- خير النفوس العارفات ذواتهاThe best souls are those that know their own selves,
- دخولى باليقين كما تراهMy entry is certain, as you see it;
- رضيت من الدنيا بقوت وشملةI am content with food and a cloak from this world,
- شربنا على الصوت القديم قديمةWe drank aged wine to the ancient melody.
- شريف متى يعتز بى غير أنهHe is noble whenever he takes pride in me, except that
- صبها في الكاس صرفاHe poured it unmixed into the cup;
- صن السر عن كل مستخبرGuard the secret from every inquirer.
- عجبا لقوم يحسدون فضائليHow strange that people envy my virtues—
- عطارد قد واللّه طال تردديMercury, by God, long has my coming and going lasted,
- غاية الحزن والسرور انقضاءSorrow and joy alike come to an end.
- في أول النزلة فصد وفيAt the onset of catarrh, bloodletting; and in
- قفا نجزى معاهدهم قليلاStop, you two; let us repay their haunts a little.
- قم فاسقنيها قهوة كدم الطلاRise and serve it to me—wine like the blood of young gazelles—
- كن كيف شئت فإن الله ذو كرمBe as you wish, for God is bountiful;
- لا أركب البحر أخشىI do not sail the sea; I fear
- لقد طفت في تلك المعاهد كلهاIndeed, I wandered through all those places of learning,
- لما عظمت فليس مصر واسعيWhen I grew great, no city could contain me.
- ما المبتلى بهم وإنThe one afflicted by them, even if
- محرك الكل أنت القصد والغرضMover of all, You are the intent and the aim,
- محن الي توجهت فكأننيAfflictions have turned toward me, so it is as though I
- نزل اللاهوت في ناسوتهاThe Godhead descended into her human nature,
- هبت نسيم وصالكم سحراThe breeze of union with you blew before dawn,
- هبطت إليك من المحل الأرفعShe descended to you from the loftiest abode,
- هذب النفس بالعلوم لترقىRefine the soul through the sciences, that it may ascend.
- هذي منازلهم أما تتذكرThese are their dwellings—do you not remember?
- هو الشيب لا بد من وخطهIt is gray hair—there is no escaping its streaks.
- وأبدت لرد الليل سود ضفائرAnd she revealed black tresses to bring back the night;
- وجماد ظل ينمو في العليAnd an inanimate thing kept growing on high—
- ولو شباب غراب قط زائلةAnd if a raven’s youth had ever faded,
- يا ربع نكرك الأحداث والقدمO dwelling, calamities and age have made you unrecognizable.
- يا ممرضي بجفون لأمراض بهاO you who sicken me with eyelids that, because of ailments within them,
