ورقاء ذات تعزّز وتمنّع
She descended to you from the loftiest abode,
You descended to me from the highest abode
A gray dove, proud and unapproachable.
A chaste one, fortified and aloof

Veiled from every knowing eye,
Veiled from every knowing eye
Yet she bared her face and wore no veil.
Though she traveled unveiled and unconfined

She came to you unwillingly, and perhaps
You came reluctantly and perhaps
She loathed parting from you, filled with grief.
Hated to part, oh anguished one

ألفت مجاورة الخراب البلقع
She felt disdain, not familiarity; but when she joined you,
You refused yet did not forget, so when you arrived
She grew used to dwelling beside the barren ruin.
You became accustomed to the ruined, desolate dwellings

And I think she forgot past days in the sanctuary,
I believe you forgot pledges of devotion
And dwellings she had not been content to leave.
And homes you were unsatisfied to leave

In the letter meem, your centerpoint, the most craggy

The thāʾ of 'the heavy' clung to her, and she found herself
You affixed the heavy thaa, becoming
Among landmarks and ruins bowed low.
Among the landmarks and bent palm trees

Weeping when you recalled your time in the Hijaz
With tears that pour and have not yet ceased.
With tears flowing unchecked

And she keeps shedding tears over the ruins [probable reading] that
Remaining silent about the favors
Were effaced by the recurring four winds.
Worn away by the blowing winds

قفص عن الأوج الفسيح الأربع
For the dense snare hindered her, and she was barred
When abundant polytheism banished you
By a cage from the height with its spacious quarters.
And cages prevented your boundless, open expanse

Until, when the journey drew near the sanctuary,
Until nearing the journey's end to the Hijaz
And departure for the wider expanse approached,
And approaching departure into the vaster space

And she became [probable reading] parted from each thing left
Enduring separation from all left behind
Behind her—a companion of the dust, unescorted.
With only the earth as your unattended mourner

She cooed; the veil had been lifted, and she saw
You were poetsing after rending veils, beholding
What sleeping eyes cannot perceive.
What cannot be grasped by sleepy eyes

And knowledge raises all who have not been raised.

Why then were you brought down from the lofty
Lofty, to the bottom of the lowest depths?
Sublime to the lowest, filthiest depths?

And she is the one whose path time cut short,
That she set like a star over the Hijaz
Until she indeed set at the very point of rising.
