- إن لاح كالغصن أورقIf he appears like a leafy bough,
- أهلا بها حسناء رود الشبابWelcome to her, a beauty tender in youth!
- أيا بصري خالف عيون الفراقدO my sight, differ from the eyes of the Faraqid stars;
- آيات وصلك يتلوها على الناسThe verses of union with you he recites before the people—
- بالله سر يا رسول حبيFor God's sake, go, O messenger of my love,
- بان سري من دموعيMy secret was revealed by my tears,
- تولعت بعتابShe has taken to reproaching

- عاد المتيم شوق كان قد ذهباA longing that had departed revisited the lovesick man,
- عفا الله عن أحباب قلبي فإننيMay God pardon my heart's beloveds, for I
- غرام غريم الوصل فيه مماطلA passion in which the one who owes union delays payment,
- فراق رمى قلبي بسقم وأوصابSeparation struck my heart with sickness and afflictions;
- قفا تريا حالا تجل عن الوصفStop, you two, and see a state beyond description.
- قمر يفوق على البدور الكملA moon surpassing the perfect full moons,
- لا تسمعي قول واشDo not listen to a slanderer's words.
- لا تقطعوا بوصال الهجر أوصاليDo not sever my limbs with unbroken estrangement;
- لو أن عذالي لوجهك أسلمواIf my reproachers submitted to your face,
- لي صاحب أخطأت في ودهI have a friend whom I was wrong to love;
- ما دمت في سفن الهوى تجري بيAs long as I remain in love's ships, which carry me onward,
- ما كان يوم وصلت الصب أفتاكHow youthful you were the day you joined the lovesick lover!
- متى يتجلى أفق مصر بأقماريWhen will Egypt's horizon shine with my moons,
- محب لكم من هجركم يتوجعA lover of yours suffers from your abandonment.
- محبوبتي واصلتنيMy beloved united with me,
- معال جازت الجوزا جوازاLofty attainments that have passed far beyond al-Jawza,
- معذبتي بالصد ما لي وما لهاMy tormentress through rejection—what ails me, and what ails her?
- هنيئا لسمع حين خاطبني صغاBlessed is the ear that listened when he addressed me.
