عَفاmay pardon اللَهُGod عَنconcerning أَحبابthe beloveds قَلبيof my heart فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
لبعدهُمbecause of their absence قَدindeed عفتI loathed ماwhat ذقتI tasted مِنof صبرِpatience
May God pardon my heart's beloveds, for I
May God forgive the loved ones of my heart, for after they left
have come to loathe, in their absence, the patience I have tasted.
I forgave what I had tasted of patience.
أَناI المفردُthe solitary one المَهجورthe forsaken one لماsince تَخلَّقواthey adopted
خَلائِقَthe ways أَهلِof those given to الكسرbreaking للقلبthe heart لاnot الجبرِmending
I am the solitary, forsaken one, since they have adopted
I am the solitary, abandoned one, since they took on
the ways of those who break the heart, not mend it.
The morals of the people of fragility, not strength.
هَنيئاًmay it bring joy لَهُمto them قَتليmy slaying وصفوُand the purity مودّتيof my affection
فَإِنَّهمfor indeed they الأَحبابُthe beloveds فيin العسرhardship واليسرِand ease
May my slaying and the purity of my affection bring them joy,
Congratulations to them for killing me and describing my love,
for they are the beloveds in hardship and ease.
For they are the loved ones in ease and in hardship.
وَإِنand though كنتُI am ممّنamong those whose لاnot تضيعُgoes to waste دماؤهمtheir blood
فَوَthen, by الشَفعِthe even إِنّيindeed I قَدalready عفوتI pardoned عَنconcerning الوترِthe wrong
And though I am among those whose blood does not go unavenged,
And if I am one whose blood is not wasted,
yet, by the even, I have forgiven the wrong.
By my life I have forgiven the severing of ties.
وَقالواand they said تبدَّلexchange منfrom هواهمlove for them بغيرهمfor others than them
فَقلتso I said لَهُمto them هَلcan ينطفيbe extinguished الجمرُthe embers بِالجَمرِwith embers
And they said, "Turn from loving them to loving others."
And they said, “He has changed from loving them to loving others,”
So I said to them, "Can embers be extinguished with embers?"
So I said to them, “Can embers be extinguished with embers?”
لئنif indeed مالَinclines إِنسانيmy eye's pupil لرؤيةto see غيرهمothers than them
فَوَالعصرthen, by Time إِنّيindeed I بَعدَafter ذاthis الصبرpatience فيin خسرِloss
If my eye's pupil should turn to look at others,
If my humanity inclined to seeing others besides them
then, by Time, after this patience I am indeed in loss.
By my life, after this patience I am at loss.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لأَرجوI surely hope أَنthat تسامحنيwill show me mercy النوىseparation
بِوَصلهمُby reunion with them منfrom قبلbefore أَنthat يَنقَضيends عمريmy life
And I do hope that separation will show me mercy
And I hope the resolve will forgive me
by reuniting me with them before my life ends.
For joining them before my life runs out.
وَأَغيدand a graceful youth منfrom إِشراقthe radiance خدّيهof his two cheeks قَدindeed بَداappeared
دَليلٌproof بأنّthat الخدّthe cheek يَرويnarrates عَنfrom الزهريal-Zuhri
And a graceful youth—from his cheeks' radiance there has appeared
The radiance of his cheek has appeared
proof that the cheek narrates on al-Zuhri's authority.
As evidence that the cheek narrates about flowers.
وَمذand since لاحappeared فيon الخدّthe cheek اِخَضرارُthe greening عذارهof his cheek-down

And since the greening of his cheek-down appeared upon his cheek,
Since greenness sparkled on the cheek in its pride
what it narrated from al-Khidr has become widely attested to me.
What the Evergreen narrated has recurred to me.
وَياand oh طالhas long lasted ماemphatic particle أَغنىsufficed محيّاهُhis face عَنin place of شَذاthe fragrance
رياضof gardens وَأَلوانand colors منof الراحwine والزهرِand flowers
And oh, how often his face has spared me the need for the fragrance of
How long has his smile sufficed instead of
gardens, and the hues of wine and flowers.
Gardens and colors of fragrance and flowers?
فخدّاهfor his two cheeks تفاحيmy apples وَعَيناهand his two eyes نرجسيmy narcissi
وعارضُهand his cheek-down مسكيmy musk وريقتُهand his saliva خمريmy wine
For his cheeks are my apples, and his eyes my narcissi,
His cheeks are apple-like, his eyes narcissus-like
and his cheek-down is my musk, and his saliva my wine.
His cheek smooth as musk, his complexion wine-like
وَليلةَand on a night بتناwe spent the night وَالرَقيبwhile the watcher بمعزلٍat a distance
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see مِنany ناهٍone who forbids يُحاولseeks to divert عنfrom أَمريmy purpose
And on a night we spent together, with the watcher far away,
One night we lay together while the watcher was absent
I saw no one forbidding me, seeking to turn me from my purpose.
And I saw no forbidder attempting to stop me
فَماso not زلتI ceased أُسقىI was given to drink راحَهُhis wine ورضابهand his sweet saliva

So I kept being given his wine and his sweet saliva,
I went on drinking his rest and slumber
until I tethered reason at the hitching-place of drunkenness.
Until I lost my mind in the bonds of intoxication
وخرّand it fell صَريعاًstricken لاno حِراكَmovement بهin it فَماso not

And it fell stricken, motionless; so I did not
And he fell unconscious, unmoving, so I did not
abstain from sin, nor was I free of guilt.
Refrain from sin or neglect crime.
عَفاmay pardon اللَهُGod عَنّيconcerning me هَلcan أَقولI compose قصيدةa poem
وَلاand not أَشتَكيI complain فيهاin it منof الصدّrebuff والهجرِand abandonment
May God pardon me! Can I compose a poem
May God forgive me! Shall I compose a poem
without complaining in it of rebuff and abandonment?
And not complain in it of aloofness and estrangement?
وَهَلand may ليfor me ياO بَدرfull moon الدُجىof the darkness أَنto أَراكَI see you قَدalready

And may I, O full moon of the darkness, see that you have
O full moon of darkness, will I ever see you again
joined me, so I come alive at our meeting on the full-moon night?
United, and brought to life by the meeting, on the night of the full moon?
وَهَلand will تَنطَويbe folded away أَيّامُthe days بعدكof your absence باللّقاby reunion
وَأَحياand I live إِذاwhen حيَّيتَyou greeted قَلبيmy heart بالنشرِwith resurrection
And will the days of your absence be folded away by reunion,
After you, will days fold up with further meetings,
and shall I live when you greet my heart with resurrection?
And will I live when you greet my heart with joy?
فَماso no لَكَfor you عذرٌexcuse فيfor جَفاءcoldness toward متيّمٍone enslaved by love
أَقامَhas abided عَلىby ماwhat سنّordained شرعthe law الهَوىof love العذريchaste (ʿUdhri)
So you have no excuse for coldness toward one enslaved by love,
You have no excuse for spurning longing Tamim
who has abided by what the law of chaste, ʿUdhri love ordained.
Who stood by what the law of passion made lawful.
فَساعَةُso an hour وَصلٍof union منكfrom you بَلrather بَعضُpart ساعةًof an hour
أَودُّI long for شِراهاbuying it لَوif تيسّرwere possible بالعمرِwith a lifetime
So an hour of union with you—rather, part of an hour—
One moment of union from you - no, part of a moment -
I long to buy, if possible, with my lifetime.
I would buy, if it were possible, with my life.
