The verses of union with you he recites before the people—
The verses of your connection, he recites to the people
a lovesick man whom remembrance stirs toward the one who forgets.
A pouring that memory moves to the people

The promise of union with you is a debt never repaid;
And the promise of your connection is a debt that has no loyalty
if only it had been a promise of estrangement, O hard-hearted one!
I wish it had been with estrangement, O cruel one

My cup I mixed with my sorrows while I have a body
bare of shame, yet clothed in wasting sickness.
Naked from nakedness but clothed with thrift

And after you the taste of patience turned
a cup that, when sipped, did not intoxicate its drinker.
Into a cup that makes the senses numb when sipped

O you who turned away from a lone, base person
who has spent the night striking fives against sixes in perplexity.
Who spent the night playing solo against doubles

And when freshness appeared on my cheek to me
I meet my hope of seeing you with despair.
I confronted my hopes of meeting him with despair

Your cheek does not fear Sulwan for its height
for it is like myrtle to the wounds of the heart.
For it is to the heart's wounds like a staff

Stop to receive my eyelids after the pouring tears poured blood
There is no harm in your stopping beside the lovesick one.
There is no harm in your standing at the pouring

Slender-waisted—if a bough saw him bending,
Blowing gently, if the branch saw it bending
no swaying bough would bend its limbs beside him.
The twigs of the May tree would not bend with it

How much his trinkets said to me when they saw my infatuation
Keep your composure, and leave me and my tinkling alone.
Take your dignity and leave me and my obsession

No reproach in it, yet the standing of the spear
yet my heart has become a target for him.
But my heart has become to it like a fortress

The stalks of chamomile turn the sun in their hands
he is supple of side, yet his heart is hard.
They have softened a little, but their hearts are cruel

For his lovers there has come, from the spear of his stature,
To its lovers, the standing of its spear
a thrust that reminded us of the plague of Amwas.
Is a stab that reminds us of the plague of ‘Amwas

You’d think it in the darkness the illumination of embers

And its nape has alighted from beneath it a shoulder

Like a branch above the firmly rooted hill

His mouth is all smiles—how fortunate the longing lover, if
A smile of a mouth, so what a joy if the ardent
he is not met, when he sees him, with a scowl.
Does not meet it when seeing it with Al-‘Abbas

An attacker from the sons of Satan fought me
so every hour of reproach is a day of Awtas.
So every hour of blame is a day of weakness

He blames me for my aspiration to supremacy but
I have no reply except to drive him off in scorn.
I have no answer but that I am lowly to him

I faced the blame with prohibition when I said to him
You have broadened my thought—or constricted my breath.
Have you broadened my ideas or constricted my breath?

I am the meteor who took the horizon as residence
when, by God's grace, I rose among the people.
When by Allah’s grace I ascended amongst the people

The close pulling friend whose tail is chaste
clouds that vie with him, never free of despair.
Dragging clouds that do not cease in despair

Verily the clouds, when they competed with him, exhausted them

Yes, and in the Nile what distant did I measure!

He has renounced asceticism so his sins are not known
yet his hours are days of wedding festivities.
But his hours are days of weddings

and yields a harvest—a lute of many modes.
Thus it is a fragrant piece of wood of different species

The lion of knights whether on the stairs or in affliction
