O eye, pour rain for the loss of the ocean.
O my eye, be generous in shedding tears for the loss of the sea with rain,
Shed tears; spare none and leave none unshed.
Pour down tears and leave neither a trace nor a drop,
لَوif رَدَّcould bring back تَرديدُrepeated shedding دَمعٍof tears ذاهِباًone departed سَبَقَتwould outstrip

If repeated tears could bring back one departed,
If the flow of a teardrop could bring back one that passed,
Meteors and embers in my eyes would outstrip a river's flow.
Sparks and embers would have streamed from my eyes like a river,

Watering the earth. So when will the blamer cease blaming if I say little?
Let it be heavenly rain, flowing in its appointed measure.
Leave it flowing naturally like rain from the sky above,

And I see my tears streaming down no other than the descender,

See my falling tears emerge from it like pearls?
Do you not see my falling tears like pearls from it?

Buckets of questions, whether perplexing or pouring forth.

And how much ink has blackened pages that it guarded
Until he made ink resemble rich brocades.
Until conformity was reached between ink and ink,

Rather, his bounty embraced them all with gladness and smiles.

When differences occur between blind people, and the judgment therein is not straightforward,
The matter grows grave and people remain lost in thought?
They said: “When knotty problems arise, notify Umar,

A blind perplexity whose ruling is nowhere written?
If ibn Idris the Imam saw him, he would acknowledge

Or delight his eye with the sight,
And sleep. Who after him can face the difficult perplexity?
He was excellent to the Ummah when he disciplined it

One whom, had the imam Ibn Idris seen him, he would then
With the discipline of one victorious for truth and considerate,
Have acknowledged, or found delight in looking at him.
You see wonders in his deduction that amaze,

He was dutiful to al-Umm when he refined it,
Reason would reject if not for the witness of eyes that have seen,
With the discerning refinement of a champion of truth.

When a group humbled themselves before mere claims,
To hear him: You have gained your desire from him.

With ease, nobility, and familiarity,
That reminded people and awakened the mindful.

And did not end up at a cup or stringed instrument,
In the rank of learning, most renowned therein.
Indeed you protected Islam’s sanctuary, diligent
فَماand not برحتَyou ceased مُجِدّاًstriving لِلعُلاfor the heights يَقِظاًwatchful
وَلاand not اِنتَهيتَyou turned إِلىto كأسa cup وَلاnor وترِa musical string
You never ceased striving for the heights, ever watchful,
Until the excellent took from it necklaces of pearls,
Nor did you turn to a wine-cup or a musical string.
You scattered the gathered enemies of religion where they
قَدindeed كنتyou were تَحميguarding حِمىthe sacred domain الإِسلامof Islam مُجتَهِداًstriving
حَتّىuntil تقلّدَwas adorned منهfrom it الجيدthe neck بالدررِwith pearls
You strove to guard Islam's sacred domain,
Inclined between feminization and broken plurals,
Until the neck was adorned with pearls from it.
You stabbed the recalcitrant in their speech
فَرّقتَyou scattered جمعthe ranks عدوّof the enemy الدينof religion حَيثwherever نحَواthey turned
فَجمعُهمso their plural بَينَbetween تأنيثfeminization وَمنكسِرِand a broken form
You scattered the ranks of religion's enemies wherever they turned,
With grammar, without stabbing with needles,
So their plural was left either feminine or broken.
At times with the sword of guidance among atheists lunging,
طعنتَyou thrust غيرَwithout مُحابٍpartiality فيinto مقالتهمtheir arguments
بِالسَمهَريَّةِwith stiff spears دونَrather than الوَخزِpricking بالإِبَرِwith needles
Without partiality, you thrust into their arguments
And times with arrows of remembrance into Tatars,
With stiff spears, not mere needle-pricks.
A great loss the heretics rejoiced at
طوراًat times بِسَيفwith the sword الهُدىof guidance فيagainst الملحدينthe heretics سُطاًassailing

وَتارَةًand at other times بسهامwith arrows الذِكرof remembrance فيagainst التترِthe Tatars
At times you assailed the heretics with guidance's sword,
Like the pantheists, Shiites, and fatalists,
At others, the Tatars with arrows of remembrance.
Would that the nights had kept one in whom
رزءٌa loss عَظيمgrievous يسرُّrejoice المحلدونthe heretics بِهِin it

كالاِتّحاديِّsuch as the Ittihadi وَالشيعيّand the Shi'i وَالقدَريand the Qadari
A grievous loss in which heretics rejoice,
Were gathered the guidance of the beneficial and harmful,
Such as the Ittihadi, the Shi'i, and the Qadari.
Would that in taking Umar’s life it took the lives
ليتَwould that اللَياليthe nights أَبقَتhad preserved واحِداًone man جُمعتwas gathered

Would that the nights had preserved one man in whom
Of his students, especially the one his life resembled,
Was gathered guidance for people of benefit and harm.
Alas! If ransom before death was offered

Would that, when they ransomed Amr, they had ransomed Umar
The Shaykh’s would have been, without doubt, people’s souls,
With his seekers' lives—and foremost among them, my own.
My wonder at a grave containing him, indeed it is wondrous
هَيهاتَalas لَوif قبلaccepted الموتdeath الفدىransom بُذِلَتwould be offered

Alas! Had death accepted ransom, there would have been offered
When it shows the expansiveness of his heart for the sea,
For the shaykh, without exception, all human souls.
My craving for the loss of the Muslims’ Shaykh, indeed

I marvel at the grave that enclosed him—a wonder indeed,
The affliction is grave, though I am stoically patient,
For it showed a breast spacious enough to hold an ocean.
My craving for him, a lamp that was lit

Alas for the loss of the Muslims' shaykh! Indeed,
Rising brilliantly with an unextinguished wick,
The calamity is immense, and my endurance fails before it.
If not for his light we would have feared the fire of his intellect

Alas for him, a lamp that burned brightly,
But he extinguished it, putter-outer of embers,
Rising in flame with undiminished brilliance.
The Nile, lantern of the lamp, was set ablaze

Without his dew of generosity, we would have feared his thought's fire,
When he passed away, so they were amazed at the river’s perception,
But with his dew he quenched the sparks.
My craving! Does composing an elegy benefit me?

When he died—marvel at the river's discernment!

In extra prayer, remembrance, and Quran until dawn,
How can the brokenhearted be enriched by phrases?
My craving for him, for knowledge he would compile

Though the night vigil would be difficult for him,
In voluntary worship, remembrance, and Qur'an until dawn.

Through deeds and words, that cannot be enumerated,
For which the loneliness of sleeplessness weighed upon him.

From people, nomads and settled, alike,
In deed and speech, never overcome by inarticulacy.

Abdul Rahim, as my sorrow has no limit,
From people, both nomads and townsfolk.

Alas for the hadith master of the age, whose banners became famous
And the ages mourn after the eye the trace,
As the sun is famous at noon.
My craving for the loss of my two sheikhs who

The knowledge of hadith ended when he died and departed;
Are most precious to me than my hearing and sight,
Time bereaves us of the traces after taking the man.
My craving for them, speaking of their perfection

An eagle of the sky, if determined, or the land, if soaring,
Revives decayed bones and distracts the living from evening talk.
One resembled the pride of Ghifar in dialect truthful

Two men whose heights the two eagles never reached:
And the other, Juhanah, if you asked about news,
The eagle of the sky when it shines, and of earth when it flies.
I never cease to wonder at the concord in their lives

This one resembled Ghifar's pride in truthful speech,
A year like a year until a month like a month,
And that one was Juhayna when you asked for news.
They lived eighty years, then a year

My wonder at the concord of their lifespans never ends:
And a quarter year, minus the slightest difference,
Year matched year, even month matched month.
Religion pursued worldly gain through them

They lived eighty years, then one more year,
A blessing that never weakened for mankind,
And a quarter-year, with a deduction for the reckoner.
With the sun, lantern of religion, and the full moon,

Religion, with worldly life following it, was swept away with them
Adorner of religion, followed in its trace,
By a calamity no mortal ever found light.
My shining suns darkened in my eyes when they set

With the sun, Siraj al-Din, there followed
My illuminating moons erased from me,
The full moon of dark nights, Zayn al-Din, in his wake.
Indeed I have tasted separation's torment among loved ones and they

My radiant sun has set from me and my moon is effaced!

Ascending to the companion at the gardens and river,
Bliss appeared, and they hastened eagerly toward it.

Suffering longing, how stony you are,
To the Companion amid gardens and rivers.

You lived after their departure, displaying endurance,
What are you to me if you look with sight?
Struggling with longing—how hard a stone you are!
Let no person from other than them fool you

And you, O eye, look at no one else;
Even if he illuminates, what is light without fruit?
If you look, I deem you possessed of no true sight.
Say to my gloomy living after its radiance:

Let no smiling face from others deceive you,
O end of purity, this is the start of turbidity,
Though it shine: how many blossoms bear no fruit!
What comes after them is no aim, O death, you seek

Say to the darkness of my life after its brightness:
You have reached the horizon ascended, so do not fly,
O end of serenity, this is the beginning of gloom.
The abodes of those completed are empty of them

Beyond them there is no further goal for you to seek, O death;
So the heart has despair and the eye has vigil,
You have reached the summit of the horizon; fly no higher.

Leaving it lonely due to that blossoming spectacle,
The heart holds grief, and the eye sleeplessness.

My tears for them and my poetry in their lament
Beloved ones of my heart, if only the cup had not circulated,
Are like pearls, some strung and some scattered.
I was keen to meet up with them but missing them passed

So I have spurned my homeland if it eludes me,
My heart's beloveds; would that the cup had never passed!

I lost desire for home when my desire was denied me.

If you speak on jurisprudence, you surpass the ancients in brilliance,
Speak and do not boast, what pride is ar-Razi with?
And charge with truth like a keen steel sword.
If you interpret, you verify every ambiguity
وَإِنand if تكلّمتَyou speak فيon الأَصلينthe two foundational sciences فاِعلُthen rise وطُلand tower above
وَقُلand say وَلاwithout فخرَboasting ماnot الرازيal-Razi بمفتخِرِentitled to boast
If you speak on the two foundational sciences, rise and tower above,
So your mental sword is transparent upon at-Tabari,
And say, without boasting: Al-Razi has no cause to boast.
Sibawayh does not raise his head if you
وَإِنand if تفسِّرyou interpret تُحَقِّقyou clarify كُلَّevery مشتبِهٍambiguity
فَسَيفُfor the sword ذهنكof your mind شَفّافٌsurpassing عَلىover الطبريal-Tabari
If you interpret, you clarify every ambiguity,
Decline grammar with an eye not downcast,
For the sword of your mind surpasses al-Tabari.
And since olden times in hadith you have indeed
وَلَيسَand not يَرفَعُraises رأساًa head سيبويهِSibawayh إِذاwhen

Sibawayh does not raise his head when
Ascended in memorization and mastery to the peak,
You turn an unbowed eye toward grammar.
My master, patience, for you know we

And from long ago in hadith you have indeed
In our misery have the example in the master of mankind,
Risen in memorization and lofty rank to the stars.
Excuse your loving one for the delay in condolences

My lord, be patient: you know that we have
For an estrangement I have remained in, what justification can I offer?
In our loss an example in the master of mankind.
Do not say to me, in gentleness rather than reproach:
وَاِعذُرand forgive محبَّكone who loves you فيfor إِبطاءdelaying تعزِيَةٍcondolences

Forgive your loving friend his tardy condolences,
“You prolonged your stay during your journey upon me.”
For my absence abroad, which gave me every cause for excuse.
After a year, converse with us in an elegy,
وَلاand do not تَقولَنَّever say ليto me فيwith غيرno مَعتَبَةٍreproach

Do not say to me, when I deserve no reproach
Why not, and we are still in the tenth of the tenth,
For having prolonged my stay on my journey:
By the right of your love, if not for nearness to you I would not

After a year, do you confide an elegy to us?
Have returned my thoughts or verified with my sight,
Why not when we were at ten of the tenth?
With what mind shall I say poetry? I had

Have reconsidered my thoughts or closely examined my reflections.
Thought and sorrow within my heart at wilderness dwelled

With what mind could I compose poetry, when there was within me
And an estrangement I remained in, utterly broken,
Grief that clouded minds and thoughts?
Moreover, grief for the Shaykh has with me no

Thought and sorrow dwelt in my heart, within my breast,
Ending until my life ends,
And exile, in which I remained utterly broken.
I missed invoking for him during my journey when I missed

All this, though grief for the shaykh has
So the missing inspired what I encountered in my travels,
For me no end until my life itself ends.
Clouds of good pleasure remain upon his grave forever

On my journey I suffered loss, when his prayers no longer reached me;
As the leaves rustled through the myrtles and paper,
Loss was the most grievous thing I encountered on my journey.
I believed his grave to be a garden, so my

Eyes understood it as a water-spring,
As long as doves lament at evening and at dawn.

My eye upon it in torrents and downpours.
